My dilemma
-
This is my '07 Si which I have had since new. The first Si Sedan delivered in town. It's 13 years old, 110,000 miles and drives like new. I have a hankering for something new but I don't really know what to do.
It is a really good town car. And I am presently driving maybe 8000 miles a year till the bug is over. I am not going to wear it out. And from the undersides I am not going to rust it out.
The problem is the new Si doesn't trip my trigger as it is too much the same. I also like my present 8000 rpm rev limit and the car is very spacious with the long windshield. My wife's 16 Civic just ain't the same.
Also, if I buy something, it will probably be in the RDX, ILX or the rumored Acura Small Hatch S range. It's not guaranteed any of those will have a stick, and I am not sure how I feel after 40 years of driving stick's giving that up.
Man, is this a dilemma. I guess it is going to take something really compelling (Probably by Honda) to move.
That is what happened with my 93 Si. At 14 years of ownership, the Si Sedan came out which I bought sight unseen and the first guy that came to look at my 93 bought it. It will probably happen that way again.

S2000 is what you need! AP1 so 9000RPM
-
The 8th gen Si is really great. I think the 9th gen is a step down even if the K24 offers some more tuning potential over the K20.
The 10th gen Si is already discontinued, taking the 2021 model year off while Honda retools factories for the 11th gen which arrives around May. I love my 10th gen Si but it doesn't have the revviness of the older NA ones.
Acura supposedly has some kind of replacement for the ILX in the works but there's no details about that yet and who knows if it'll get a stick.
The Type-R is still available for 2021. I was tempted to get one instead of my Si but the Si's sunroof and heated seats aren't available on the R.
The 11th gen is going to be an updated version of the 10th kinda like the progression from 8th to 9th, so maybe one of the new Si or R will grab your attention?
-
13 years is a long time in automotive years. I think you deserve to treat yourself again. You'll know when it's the right car.
-
I got a Type R that I can shift a 9000 all day (when racing.....). 8000 is just fine.
-
@texturedsoyprotein You know - The R is interesting but I too would miss the sunroof. Also, I will be driving it all year so I am not sure how interested in an even edgier R. Hopefully Acura comes out with something more civilized.
-
@racinbob The R is actually pretty dang livable as a daily. The adaptive dampers are pretty comfy in regular mode and the ride only gets a little stiff in R mode. My Si has similar adaptive dampers but the springs aren't as stiff as the R. It's not luxury car smooth but it handles bumps quite well. The main issue with DDing an R is Honda's inexplicable choice of 20" wheels with 30 series tires. I know those WI roads all too well and the wheels would take a beating. Lots of R owners downsize to 19s or 18s to get more sidewall.
The upcoming ILX replacement could have some potential. The current ILX is basically a lux'ed up 9th gen Si with a dual clutch automatic and no LSD. If the replacement is available with a stick & LSD that could be pretty interesting. There's definitely room for something like the ILX as a luxury alternative to the Si which has decent equipment levels but no luxury pretenses. It's just that the actual ILX we can get right now isn't all that great.

This is me when the time comes to replace my Accent as my daily driver, except replace the '40 years' with 13 years...same sentiment though...
As I like cheap, basic cars, I am still hoping things like the Nissan Micra and Mitsu Mirage (or new Kia Rios or Accents, of course) will still be around for me to get used with a stick (I never buy new)...
-
I know this quite well having the 05 C-XRS which in spirit is a Toyota precursor to the FA5 (and predecessor to the Acura GSR 4-door DB8). I've wondered a few times what I'd do if it had to send it to scrap. At least Honda kept the Si alive. It's now been over 15 years and Toyota still hasn't made a 4-door compact that's more fun.
Contemplated used but newer Si, WRX, STI and EVO. Would like to see big T throw that Turbo Triple [G16E-GTS] in a 'rolla though.

@racinbob
The '07 Si Sedan is the absolute best.
I had a GGM '07 Si Sedan that I really really really wish I didn't have to get rid of when I did, and I've nearly bought another '07 since then.
In '08 TPMS was implemented (and I find those systems more annoying than beneficial -- just look at your tires, people!), so really the '07 is THE.BEST.I fully support your holding on to yours until something new really strikes your fancy. You've got a great one there!
-
@racinbob @ 110k, you are conservatively only half way through the car's lifecycle, maybe even a third of the way through depending on how gently you treat it. My DD is an 07 accord with 227K on the clock and no issues. I say keep it until something catches your eye.
I will say the RDX turbo is a surprising amount of torque in an SUV box, I can only image how much livelier that motor combo would be in a sedan, so I'll be shopping Acuras when i decide to replace my Accord. -
Maybe something from Korea?

In no particular order:
CTR
S2000
997
Cayman/BoxsterAny of these interest you?

@racinbob my Mazda 3 bores me to death and I’ve owned it for 11 years. That’s why I’m putting my money into my Datsun 240z. That’s a car I can drive in the non snow months with great vigor and great pleasure. I’ll keep the Mazda as it’s dead reliable and does car things quite well.
-
@racinbob Just keep it until something comes along that really flips your trigger. No sense in jumping the gun if you don't have feelings for what should replace it, and it's still working fine.
-
If it's paid off, running reliably, and you actually enjoy driving the car...it honestly doesn't sound like too much of a dilemma to me, especially if the new models don't do much for you.
-
Any idea what you'd want for your existing Civic?
I currently drive an '01 DX. It's not very exciting.
-
Just keep it
-
If there is a car you love, go for it! if not, then keep driving your current car until you find something that you will not be able to resist.
Maybe something sportier? ND Miata is always the answer, but outside of starting a flame war, maybe the upcoming GT86? Or get a killer deal on the outgoing one?
-
@racinbob sounds like a good car. So keep it. We drive a turn of the century Subaru Forester for much the same reason...
-
@racinbob 93 SI
. It's the car I learned how to drive stick on. It was my friends and then he gave it to his nephew who destroyed it.
. Old NA Civic SI in good condition are so rare. I get it that you have the new car itch, but I'm sure you can put that car on a site like BAT in 2 more years and it'll be worth twice what it is today. Purely from an investment perspective, I say keep it. When you're ready to move on, I'm sure a fellow OPPO will buy it.
-
@krustywantout My scangauge, its top recoded speed and the RPM it was doing it at......
-
@smugaardvark Heck, paid cash for it.

Oh, I'll keep selling it here with an Oppo discount in mind. But I'll probably give it to my niece or Anthony if I part with it.

I already have a '74 Alfa Spider that I struggle to burn a tank of gas a summer so the Miata or S2000 think is not a motivator. Remember I race a Type R and have done World Challenge so I don't need an adrenalin fix for the street. I would think of a Alfa Giulia but no dealers within 150 miles and I don't want the overhead. Kia Stinger V6 could be fun. Kind of waiting to see if Acura comes up with something similar. Maybe the last generation TLX special addition might be fun too.
