First off - welcome to all the newcomers!
You've reached a very special corner of the internet, Oppositelock! It was created out of the comment section of Jalopnik but has since become its own community.
The main goal of Oppositelock is to have meaningful interactions with fellow enthusiasts, something there is precious little of on the internet. We vary in age greatly and in background even more but you're almost sure to learn something every day you spend on Oppo.
The attitude here isn't so much about likes and followers, we get enough of that on other far more toxic platforms. Meaningful interaction is the name of the game. Have a conversation, share something you learned, ask a question, pose a thought experiment, give us the story of your first car and things like this.
We're all sad that DriveTribe is shutting down and you're all welcome to hang out here but it's not DriveTribe so here are some basic guidelines on what you can/should post here.
Be Excellent to Each Other
The golden rule, Bill and Ted's wisdom, don't be a dick. Whatever your choice of phrasing here is this is the number one rule. Treat others how you'd like to be treated and you'll fit in great.Polls
Drivetribe really pushed these as a way for cheap meaningless interaction, we don't. There is a poll engine but don't just post a question without any background. Let us know who you are, why you're asking that question and what your thoughts are. If you do that you'll get meaningful responses to your post. Also don't overdo it, 1 poll a day max per user. Don't make me turn off the poll function please.Q&A/AMA
A lot of the same information as polls. AMA and Q&A are welcome here but introduce yourself first. Tell us what you like, what you do, where you live (generally speaking) and what we should care about. If you do that you'll get meaningful engagement and great questions that probably make you think. Also don't abandon a Q&A post, hang around and answer questions!Image Posts
This isn't Instagram. We'd love to see your ride, a cool car you spotted on the street, a project or something else you find interesting but include some information in your post along with it. Give us a sentence or two about what we're looking at, who you are, where you saw it and what you think about it.YouTube
Self-promotion is not completely frowned upon here, but the general rule of thumb is to make the post stand on its own a little. Give us something to go on, a reason to comment or click away or whatever. An empty youtube channel is not a great place to start.Lurking
We have a substantial lurking user base here and we love them! If you're unsure about what you have to add just hang out and read for a while, make an occasional comment and just have fun. When you're ready, we're happy to hear from you! This post will probably be updated as we go and feel free to ask any questions of any of us. We're happy you're here but if you want to stay and make Oppo better (please do!) follow these general rules. Also take a look at the guidelines post for more information.

Thanks for posting this. I agree. I think people just need to take a second and ask themselves a few questions before posting. Like, "does this post offer any benefit to other people?" If the answer is no, then wait it out until something more interesting pops into your brain. And that's not to say that we can't enjoy silly goofy, or even short posts, but just posting an image, or a screengrab, or a single sentence or question is frankly a waste of everyone's time. I think it's also important to ask yourself "how many posts have I made today?" if the answer is more than 2 or 3, then it can easily be construed as spam, which we can all agree is obnoxious.
This is just my opinion, but I'd honestly advise the new folks to not post at all for a few days and actually see how great Oppo is, and see if it's something they'd like to be a part of. For some people the answer is going to be no, and that's ok.
That said, it's also ok if Oppo changes a bit too with the new additions. Being stuck in our ways and refusing to let anything new grow is a recipe for winding up with a dead website with zero users.
Balance in all things as usual. -
Fortunately, no one has been a dick so far. Think about it. Most internet comment sections and forums have more than their fill of nastiness, acrimony, and one-upsmanship. I haven’t seen any of that in our new members these last couple of days. They’ve been friendly and courteous.
Yes, we’re not into polls without context or Q&As without a story. But, they probably are confused by our in jokes and shit posts. And they haven’t even seen a theme day yet, which let’s face it, sometimes becomes kinda our version of spamming the forum with images. So we have acclimating to do on both fronts. Getting out of our comfort zones a little will be good for us.
This’ll be cool.

This is honestly one of the worst parts of moderating a group of people, and I'm grateful we don't have (much) nastiness on Oppo.

Yup. I’m so glad we don’t have to do that much moderating compared to other places so we can focus on developing the site.

It might also be a good to make Best of Oppo more prominent in a week or so.
Maybe even do a best of repost day/week for pre-tribe members? (Good example is Mergio today). It’s also perhaps a way to introduce ourselves so they know exactly what
can of worms they’ve openedis good Oppo.Appreciate all the effort your all doing to explain and help new members understand that were are community based, so just publishing their own topics (especially those with little content) and not interacting with other posts won’t get you far here.
