Remember: his Homeland Security chief was called back from Europe and later fired because she was attending a cybersecurity summit when Trump was having a shitfit over his wall.

@just-jeepin Scary stuff. I wonder what the policy changes will be as part of the fallout from this. I'm not in IT and I wonder what steps could have been taken to prevent this from happening .

@Just-Jeepin Not an IT guy in the least, but this is potentially one of the worst attacks on US institutions by an outside actor.

The COVID response and US hacking have to be the top two (of so many) failures of this administration. Maybe throw in the cult-ifcation of a large part of the American populous as well. It's not hard to see that the next administration (and most likely future admins) will be hamstrung by these things, but it is hard to see the totality of the damage and the end result of that damage. It feels this country has fallen far, but perhaps it was here all along.

@looseonexit I think the longer-term damage is the destruction of the firewall between politics and governing. It was never all that thick, but there used to be norms around how the justice department was employed, etc.

That and the new normal that elections are only legit if your side wins.

@looseonexit I'm not sure if we can blame the administration since the software that was compromised was also used by many in the private sector and they didn't catch the hack until now. The entire IT industry as a whole needs more vigilance when to comes to preventing these issues.

I can't believe they didn't have two factor authentication, hell, I have to use it when logging into my work VPN. Just more embarrassment for the regime (but they aren't actually embarrassed as they have no shame nor self-awareness).

@fintail The hack was through the installer programs. Any prompt would look like an update so no authentication required.

@krustywantout That's one hell of an open door. Funny. Makes me wonder what else is out there.
