He has made this look easy. Now, scalability is the question.
-
Yup...put any feedback or suggestions or the like in the Master Feedback thread! Jminer's out from home right now, but I'll sure he'll check things later!
-
@rusty-vandura Scalability has been in my thoughts since the beginning. It's why I set it up in AWS. It seem like we might be migrating it over to oppositelock.com here as well.
Right now it's on a tiny singular server, but I'll change that here tonight probably and build in some load balancers and juice server capacity while I'm at it.
-
@jminer yeah, itβs already starting to have server issues. I got a 503 excessive load warning a few minutes ago.
-
@interstate366 I expected that to happen at some point. We're already above where I thought we'd have capacity issues. Tonight I'll redo our infrastructure and make is more robust We're at about 50 concurrent users now.
-
If you need any donations to help with any of that for the time being, let me know!
-
@rallydarkstrike I appreciate it, we'll see what the direction goes though before I accept anyone's money. I'm lucky to have a good job and disposable income so am happy to shoulder any costs as we get going.
-
@jminer Very kind of you friend!
-
@jminer Damn. At this point we're going to have to erect some sort of Wall of Gods or something...
-
@jminer Any feel for how much traffic it'll take before AWS costs get meaningfully expensive? We use them at work to run a big data platform on so i understand their billing model (inasmuch as anyone does - all the big cloud guys are pretty good at making it impossible to model your costs), but I have no feel at all for how that translates to a web server use case.
-
@distraxi I was waiting until we hit a point where folks wanted this to stay (at least for medium term) before I asked for any money. Right now my calculations (depending on varying storage and bandwidth) are like $8 a day to run. It's pretty cheap in the grand scheme of things and if our load or traffic shoots up we may need to re-evaluate.
You're right though, this stuff is notoriously hard to estimate though. I know companies that did a big could push on bad estimates and then pushed it all back to on-prem datacenters. Oppo is small though, so cloud makes sense.
We're at 185 registered users, 445 unique visitors and 10k page views today as of now.
Our traction is strong, and the interactions are getting a bit easier here already with updates and changes so I feel positive, but I want to give it a few days before I'm comfortable making that call.
Time, not money has been the big sink so far- it's not just me either. RallyDarkStrike has been doing an amazing job with community management and NickHasAnExocet and Jb boin both helping on the back end. Several others have also chipped in with tasks here and there and I shamefully can't remember them all right now.
-
@jminer *$8 a day, so it costs just under 3k a year for a website? god dam.
-
@peter_black It depends on the traffic and responsiveness. Once we settle into a better traffic pattern we can adjust and maybe drop that number a bit, but this shit ain't cheap. Hell if we were paying for the labor of those building this that hosting number would be insignificant

Lifetime Oppo Black memberships all round!

I'm just here to add to the server load. Don't mind me.

@Rider That's really all any of us are good for. But we have good camaraderie and that's all that matters!
