WTF DMV
-
I just switched from a West Virginia license to a North Carolina license today. I had to show proof of insurance to get a NC license. So... if I didn't have a car, I wouldn't have been able to get a license.
That sounds really dumb to me.
Luckily my wife was doing the same thing at the same time and I'm insured on her car too. So I at least had enough proof to get it done today. -
@noodles I believe you also have to have insurance in SC to get your license.
-
A government institution doing/requiring dumb things? In America? I'm shocked!
-
@e90m3 it just sounds silly to me. In my mind the license comes before the car. We'll probably have to deal with the SC DMV next year.
-
@noodles I would tend to agree, I can understand where they're coming where if you need a license then you're probably driving which means you should have insurance. I do understand counter arguments and it probably shouldn't be a blanket requirement, but I can at least understand their reasoning.
-
@e90m3 I can understand why they do it, but if I was poorer and needed to sell my car to make the move, I would have instantly cancelled my insurance and after having to wait 2 months for an appointment at the DMV probably wouldn't still have paper proof. I would basically have to ask my neighbor or a co-worker if I could insure myself on their car.
-
@noodles I haven't looked into it, but I wonder if there is some policy where you can just get basic insurance without having a car. Like they say, it's expensive to be poor.
-
@e90m3 I hope you're right for others sake. It's crazy how expensive they make it to be poor.
I'm done ranting, thanks for listening -
