One of You Propeller Heads... I need some ideas.
-
I use Google Classroom, which gives me grades in some kind of table.
I'd like to be able to grab this data and parse it into an Excel file or CSV or something. Pimarily, I need the Overall Grade, and the name next to it, for the entire column. There are various ways -- Chrome extensions and the like -- to pull the grades for a given assignment, but not to capture that overall grade column. I've tried a few things without success, and I'd be grateful for any suggestions.
-
Does just copy/paste into Excel/Sheets work? That would be the easiest approach, and it is supposed to, but it's pretty hit or miss whether the table actually copies right.
Otherwise I'd be hoping that Google Classroom has that built in somewhere. Not that it would be super hard to grab it otherwise, but try for the easy way first.

It appears you can export to CSV, which Excel can read, but it's hidden.

That's exactly what I was going to suggest. Cleanup is always a pain, but it's just two columns so it should be quick.

@just-jeepin If you have a CSV, you can just right click and open with Excel can't you? On Windows.

On any version of Excel, either platform.

@rusty-vandura I thought we got rid of grades.

I had a grad school class mate from US Santa Cruz in the 90s. He said they didn't have grades. I never thought much about what they used for assessment instead. Educational programs and accrediting/licensing bodies everywhere are obsessed with numerical scales in the form of standardized tests, etc.
-
@chariotoflove Professors had to write a paragraph about each and every student. That may have changed.
-
@just-jeepin It picks up everything but the Overall Grade.
-
@bicyclebuck Because of how it's presented, you cannot highlight the first two columns without picking up the entirety of each line.
-
@facw I've tried all of that.
-
@rusty-vandura Welp, if you provided the HTML (save the page as HTML) I could extract the contents into a spreadsheet for you with some scripting, but obvious privacy concerns are a problem.
-
@just-jeepin I could provide you with that. But I need to do it weekly for five different classes. If I could send you the source and you just analyze it and tell me what's there, I could look for other solutions. I have no idea what I am looking at.
-
@rusty-vandura I'll be glad to take a look after work this evening, although I'm not sure how best to securely share a copy of the HTML.
-
-
@classicdatsundebate Thanks. This method does not capture the overall grade.

No matter what you try, there will be some cleanup work over in Excel. If you export all the grades, you'll need a formula to calculate the overall grade. If you copy and paste, you'll have to delete the columns you don't want.
I do this kind of stuff all the time, so I always expect to deal with cleanup and it's not a big deal to me.
-
@bicyclebuck I actually have heaps of experience at this sort of thing, but there's always manual labor involved. I'd like to better understand how the information is being presented to me.
-
@rusty-vandura I'll be back around 8 Eastern, if you can find a way to share the content that you're comfortable with.

What do you expect from a Banana Slug?

Print to PDF and paste or import to excel?
-
@smugaardvark
That’s hilarious! -
@jerc1500 or print for real then take a picture with a potatocam then use OCR.

@chariotoflove I say it from a place of love. As in, the love of my life graduated from UCSC, and would yell fierce and hurtful things at me if I disparaged her school.
