Ooh, just had an etiquette thought

Kinja has trained many of us to acknowledge comments with an upvote; not just stellar, funny comments, just...comments. Being friendly.
Being friendly and sociable is good, I don't want to discourage that, but it's worth considering whether we could start a new culture of reserve comment upvotes for "hey, that's really insightful or really funny". I know at this point I pretty much ignore them in my notifications feed, but at least on this forum they tend to be more difficult to differentiate visually from responses.
And I hate feeling obligated to upvote everything. Don't ask, I just have this allergy to social obligations. Really, I'm a very anti-social guy, so there's that, too.
Anyway, thought I'd throw that out there. Flame away.

@just-jeepin I don't think an upvote needs to be reserved for a special occasion. I like to use them as an acknowledgement that I have read your response to me, but I don't have anything to say back.
I certainly don't feel you should be obligated to upvote either. I can tell you with 100% certainty that in all my time on Oppo, I never once thought to myself, "Hey, that D-bag never starred my comment!"
-
@shop-teacher I treat them the same. Fairly sparingly but frequently as a 'I agree' message when I don't reply to someone.
-
@just-jeepin They still fill the space of: I found that funny, your take is correct, or I've read what you said but dont have anything worth saying in response.
-
@just-jeepin They can clutter up notifications, but there’s a good amount of control in the settings for how often you see these notifications, if ever. I think they’re a positive, overall.
-
I too use them as a way to indicate that I read and liked a comment, but I don’t have anything useful to add. But some other members are much more reserved with their stars. You get to know who those are pretty quickly, and it’s fine.
-
@sony1492 upvoted because your take is correct and I don't have anything worth saying in response
-
I usually use them to acknowledge some extra funny or poignant. But I always check any comment notifications that I get. Being not THE most active member I tend not to get bombarded with stuff so I usually type a response. This has definitely been the most active week for me ever on Oppo.
-
@sn4cktimes And I thank you - you were also oppo #4 on this platform which was great with early feedback.

Heart-click

I use them as ways to curry favor from strangers on the internet and bait them into liking me. Unless I'm doing it passive-aggressively.

@rusty-vandura Done-zo!

@just-jeepin I agree, but now I'm conflicted. Do I upvote your comment or not?
-
@just-jeepin I always thought your rationale was how the upvote/star worked. I can see that it can be applied for different reasons. The reason this group has been successful is because there are no predetermined social etiquette norms other than the obvious limitations to nsfw and being awesome to each other. "Let others use the interaction tools as they seem fit but we don't get upset if it doesn't follow our expectations" is what I love about this place. I have felt the same way as you have in the past but have realized that I need to accept the practice and set my emotions to accept it.

@jminer s’no problemo. Those that can’t do teach... but those that can’t do at all help where they can...?
Hey. I was just glad to help with the limited skills I’ve got. And if, for the most part that was just messing with the editor and plopping up a post and some replies I’m glad to do it. If I had any real computer skills I would’ve picked up a torch and gone to work with you vs just holding a flaming marshmallow stick.
