Has anyone here "over-consumed" regarding their vehicle purchase?
-
Here's what I mean: did you intentionally purchase something that had more than you're looking for going in, even if you were unlikely to use that feature, or unlikely to use it often enough to justify?
Maybe it was the convenience of where the car was located. Or perhaps the price was too good to pass up for the bump. How about you were ready to just say YOLO and treat yourself? Or maybe you're really scared you'd have buyer's remorse if you bought down.
I ask because as I pointlessly window shop pickups that I will never buy -- or as I call these days: "weekdays" -- I really prefer single cabs for a number of reasons but I'm think an extended and maybe even a double cab might be a better idea for the long haul. Similarly, I've also been wondering about bumping up the power, even though I will seldom need it. Do I need a V8 to take a mattress to the dump? Do I need 4WD when I pull over for a 6-pack on the way home from said dump. No, but let me tell you: power would have been nice when I make my annual gravel runs or need to maintain freeway speeds under a full load. Or shoot, maybe someday -- God forbid -- I'll actually need to pull something.
Anyway... Of all the things on my mind, somehow I ended up writing this instead.
Well... Goodbye.

Yes: I bought a Duramax 2500. Did I need it? No.
I wouldn't buy a full size pickup without a diesel. I said this when I was hammered in my teens at a friends party and I damn well meant it. Still do. Would own again.
-
Nope. I'm cheap. If I buy something with more power or stuff than I need, it's because it was cheaper than the one without.
That said, when I bought my truck, 4WD was a necessity. If you saw my hill, you'd understand why. It only snows a couple times a year here, but you're stuck at the bottom in a 2WD truck when it does...

When I bought my LJ I wasn’t looking for the Rubicon trim because I had no intention of taking it off-road. It just happened that the only candidate I found after months of searching was one.
And of course I took it to an off-road park before I made my first payment because once I had it, how could I not?
-
I bought a TL when there was absolutely nothing wrong with the TSX I traded in for it other than it reminded me of my ex.

@Dr-Zoidberg My chronic cheapness has led me to underbuying several vehicles which I very much regret. I underbought my 2012 Focus hatch. It was base with zero options and the lack of cruise ended up bugging the hell out of me. My wife's 2010 Flex we bought in 2wd without a sunroof as it was cheaper and regretted both not getting the ecoboost and missed the sunroof.
I did over buy once a long time ago. It was 2005 and we were looking for a new (used) car to replace something, I don't recall exactly what. We wanted a late 90's/early00's Explorer, 4wd was on the list but the rest was whatever. We ended up at a dealer that had several and the one in the color my wife liked had a dead battery but the sales person said 'How about this 2005 Eddie Bauer one' and my wife jumped at a test drive. We loved it and after several hours of sales-person fuckery we had it. It was like $10k more then we wanted to spend but it was in excellent shape, had like 30k miles and was decked out (for 2005). That truck was amazing and we ended up putting almost another 200k on it over the next 10 years.
The last couple vehicles we bought we got with almost exactly what we wanted (outside of color).

@dr-zoidberg I mean, the only reason why I bought the higher trim Alltrack was for the audio system, so I guess I feel you.
-
@interstate366 But that's a fine reason. I kind of meant like, let's say you wanted a TL, but left with a TL SH-AWD kind of thing. Though I suspect you wanted a Sh-AWD upfront.
-
@Dr-Zoidberg I under bought on my alltrack because I specifically wanted the car without a sunroof and having a physical key and smaller wheels were both nice pluses, and it still had the features I really wanted in a golf wagon (DSG since I couldn't find any manuals for sale, heated + faux leather seats, AWD). Plus, only car in an actual color for 200 miles of me. Wish I had radar cruise control, nicer seats, and better audio once and a while, but the first one is kind of silly and the second and third ones are things I plan to upgrade haha!
It also didn't hurt it was lightly used not new and quite a bit cheaper...
-
I'm like a habitual over-consumer.
Case in point: Used to borrow my parents Honda Ridgeline frequently. I loved the thing. So practical.
When they sold it, I had a void in my life. But rather than getting only what I needed...I got a Super Duty 7.3 4x4 with an 8 foot bed.

I under bought my Subaru and my now ex-wife's Buick in the past. No longer. I had a taste when I bought the Jetta hybrid (RIP) and it was loaded. I loved all the bells and whistles. My Niro is nearly loaded and I regret not getting the heated seats but then I wouldn't have the lovely orange exterior and interior trim. It was a sacrifice I was willing to make lol.
-
@dr-zoidberg Yeah, I bought the R-Sport version of the XE. In reality, this was always going to be a daily driver, and I had no need for the bigger wheels or supercharged V6.
Now, that's not to say I have regrets. Because I definitely do not. But the car is definitely way more than I need for my daily commute.
-
@Dr-Zoidberg I mean basically this is the story of my life. Was going to buy a Honda VFR Interceptor, ended up with a CBR1000RR Repsol. Needed a truck, an S10 would have been perfect and I ended up with a Ram 2500 ext. cab long bed 4x4 with a Cummins.
Wife needed a new CUV and we ended up with a Terrain Denali. In this case a lightly optioned mid-trim would have been fine but the Denali had everything standard and was less money.
Hell, I just bought the SS 1LE Camaro and its pretty much going to be my daily.
I think if we're all being honest with ourselves, we all over buy. I mean all the car most of us need most of the time is a Tercel.
-
I've bought two wagon with 7 seats and to the best of my knowledge never had more than a single extra passenger.
-
@Dr-Zoidberg 1G Tundras are nice trucks, and much cheaper than Tacos
-
@dr-zoidberg I would say buying slightly more truck than you really need isn't a bad thing, especially for that one time you really need it. I've never used a truck and thought, "Damn, I wish I had the smaller engine.", but I have used a Tacoma and thought "Damn, I need a bigger truck." Some people call it overcompensating, but those people preach for wagons that they never fill up to sedan capacity. V8 trucks are their own special kind of fun.
Hell no I didn't need a Corvette, a Miata would have sufficed, but I have no regrets that I didn't get a Miata.
-
@dr-zoidberg Do I need an aging german car? No! Am I intoxicated with every curve of sheetmetal and every rasp of the engine? 1000% yes.
-
@cb to be fair, VW and Audi DO know know how to spec the audio for the higher end stuff. and B&O system in my moms A3 is killer
-
I have two five doors cars with 5 seats each, one is a wagon with all it's wheels driving and i certainly don't need all of that, a small McLaren with only two seats and two wheel drive would do the job for my commutes well enough.
-
Everything beyond my old Volvo is overconsumption. I don't need a truck, or a sports car, or a motorcycle, let alone three. If I were a minimalist I would have just the Volvo and a bicycle as transportation.
How about you were ready to just say YOLO and treat yourself?
That was the entire thought process behind my recent Mustang purchase. Didn't need another car at all, but I thought to myself, if I don't buy a nice, late-model sports car now, I might never do it. Tomorrow is promised to no one. All I could think of was this Corvette commercial:
-
There are 6 motorcycles in my garage.
you tell me
-
I had no actual reason to by a truck other than "I want one" and "I like this one".
Now that I have it, I've used the capabilities somewhat frequently, from offroading, to hauling stuff including engines, pavers, house stuff, and what-have-you, to towing my track car.
I like my truck.
-
@dr-zoidberg I once traded in my car for a much cheaper car so that the dealership actually paid me money in the transaction, which I needed so that I could put a deposit and first months rent down on an apartment. A few months later I bought an Evo VIII. Because I am so smrt.
-
I think my "needs" would be covered by a Changli (for local errands) and a Tata Nano (for those long freeway trips). Fortunately they don't sell those here. I can't imagine being satisfied with those, but I guess you can get used to anything.
-
@atfsgeoff dang that commercial is really depressing. I was hoping it would happen later in the guys life, nope. So what's the story, buy one in the afterlife? Eesh
