It got 2 feet taller, thanks to a new survey of Mt Everest jointly conducted by China and Nepal.
Consensus seems to be that's partly improved methods since the last survey in 1955, but partly that Everest actually is getting taller. It's on the uphill side of the junction between Indian and Eurasian continental plates, so estimates are it rises something like 1/4" per year through tectonic drift.
So now you know: does your life feel different now you're living on a bigger planet?
<this piece of useless information was brought to you by the wait time before Americas Cup racing starts>

@distraxi fake news. Everyone knows that the farthest point from the center of the earth isn't Everest. (Fun fact - Chimborazo is)
-
Just wait until that height trickles down. . .
-
@williamssw We’ll have none of that modern scientific BS in this thread, thank you. The earth is flat, Everest is the pointiest bit on top, and underneath it’s turtles all the way down. That’s just the way it is; I will brook no argument.
-
Also lots of dead frozen bodies.
-
@distraxi our model of the milky way changed too! over the last year or two we're figuring out that it's had a much more violent past than imagined!
-
@distraxi turtles shmurtles. It's elephants.
-
@beefchips We thought it was made in an explosion, how could it be worse.
-
@distraxi I thought it was because they now include the snow on top in the height calc.
-
@CB big explosion followed by many collisions! Lucky we're here at all, seems to me.

@williamssw Only in the thrust bearing, according to the late great Sir Pterry.

@classicdatsundebate that’s why there used to be multiple numbers, apparently. This time they agreed to subtract that.
-
@distraxi I've been thinking on the whole tectonic shift per year stat. It's an average number, but it may not necessarily mean it moves 1/4" every year. It may very well not move at all for many years, and then shift a couple feet or more in one huge earthquake and subsequent aftershocks.
Sometimes that's how it works, anyway.

Um, what do you think the Elephants stand on?!

Yes... it feels bigger like my penis!!!
-
@manwich You'll probably want to get that surveyed then

'Looks down... '
Done!

@brickman and poop
-
@manwich Public service announcement: penis surveys generally speaking have a better result if you get a suitably qualified third party to do them...

Hmmm... where do I get this qualified third party?
Well people go to school to get qualifications, right?
So I guess I should go to kid's school and ask one of their teachers, right?
RIGHT?

@manwich
Mine isn't very big, but you still wouldn't want it poking you in the eye. -
