Lego Gas Station and Workshops
Shop-Teacher last edited by Shop-Teacher
I've been doing a lot of Lego building lately. I find it meditative. It clears my mind. I mostly build customs, and I don't plan what I'm going to do ahead of time. I just start building, and see where I end up.
I tend to build in "streaks," where I have a huge chunk of creativity just pour out of me. I'll build a vehicle or two or three for a week straight, and then nothing for weeks. I build when the spirit moves me, if you will.
Most of the time, my creations get stacked on some ever-more crowded shelves, but every now and then, I like to set up some scenes on my workbench. This is what I set up tonight.
There are elements of sets in this, there is some old stuff I've shown before, some modified things, and some new things. I'm particularly proud of the gas station I built.
My tire/auto shop is ever-evolving. I like where it's at right now.
I also have a formula race car prep shop. This is a shop I've had for a long time, but I made some changes and added several cars to it.
I was able to add formula cars to that shop, by building a new go-kart shop, and moving those out. I also built more go-karts.

Nice! Kinda reminds me of the truck stop setup I had when I was a kid.
@looseonexit That's a really cool set!
@aestheticsinmotion That's a high compliment

Thanks. I had a couple big sets like that as a kid. Another was the #1682 shuttle, but mostly smaller things like the space ones, cars, and planes (#6375 Trans Air Carrier!). I should get them from my mom’s place some day. I haven’t touched Legos in ages aside from playing with the kiddo but them, HotWheels/Matchbox, and Micro Machines were my thing as a kid. My wife even got me the Apollo set a couple years back but I just can’t get myself to build it for whatever reason.
I’m always impressed by people who build stuff on their own with Legos, so looking through the pics it’s neat to see what you’ve done. I just follow the instructions and have a hard time being creative with them. It’s odd since I design new things all the time for work lol.
@looseonexit Hot Wheels, Matchbox cars, and Micro Machines were a bigger part of my childhood than Lego, but I always loved Lego too. It was in middle school that I started building custom models of cars/trucks/garages. They were pretty crude at first, but got better and better over time. I kept doing that until my mid 20's. In the span of a couple months, I started my first teaching job, and my parents sold my childhood home. The Lego got packed away into three big bins, and stayed there for about a decade.
I always build whatever sets I get. It's a good way to learn new building techniques. I put the set aside for a few weeks, and then decide if I want to keep the set as-is, modify it, or tear it apart completely and build something else. Tearing apart sets used to be the only way I could get more of a lot of the plates and specialty pieces needed to build my own creations. Now I can buy bulk loose Lego without having to do that. I buy fewer sets now, but the ones I do buy are much more likely to stay together. Although I usually modify them at least a little bit.

@shop-teacher thats pretty cool. that looks like some vintage Lego's before all the fancy custom shapes. My son has a set of voersized legos and basically just has me build a tower so he came body slam it.
@opposaurus-wrx Thanks! I don't like the overly specialized pieces of some modern Lego sets. I bought a huge bin of Lego this summer, and in that was a Lego helicopter where the entire body is four molded pieces. It's kind of lame. I like stuff built out of more basic pieces.
It makes me happy that Lego has actually been transitioning back to building things out of basic blocks, rather than extremely specific moulded pieces.

Tires tires and more tires!
Did you know LEGO is the largest tire producer in the world?

My uncle just gave me the truck stop set in the box. I have been eyeing it since I was a kid.
