Wartime golfing rules
-
In the fall of 1940 the Richmond Golf Club in the UK was bombed. This led to them creating a special set of wartime rules for players.
I’m not a golfer myself, but I can only imagine the dedication required to play around unexploded bombs even if they did use flags to mark off safe distances.
I’m sure a few of these are somewhat tongue in cheek, but I bet the club appreciated players picking up shrapnel to save wear and tear on mowers.
-
Wow that’s nuts. I don’t think there is any hobby I like enough to play near unexploded ordinance.
-
The most exciting round of golf ever.
You listening PGA? More pyrotechnics needed, for old times sake. -
@kiltedpadre
Some people take their golf very seriously.
-
Seems a bit like going to bars in a pandemic
Oh it's safe just wear a mask!
-
some strong keep calm and carry on vibes
-
@exage03040 I’d actually start watching golf if there were more explosions.
-
-
@qaaaaa You just need the right mask.
Which brings up a personal point of annoyance. I’m trying to talk my grandmother out of having a birthday gathering at a local pizza place. She’ll be 93!!
It doesn’t help that my aunt and cousin are encouraging it. -
We are literally at war with literal fascism; sounds like a great time to hit the links
-
Number 7's a bit harsh.

@carsoffortlangley At least they give you a do over if you’re ball is blown up. I’m surprised there’s not a rule where they discuss what to do if the concussion from an explosion moves your ball.
-
@just-jeepin My aunt and uncle are actually really good people, but they have numerous opinions that have made me ok with only seeing them a few times in normal years.
-
@kiltedpadre That is so stereotypically old school British, up there with milkman making deliveries to the steps of houses that aren't there anymore
-
@ranwhenparked I detest the slideshow format for pictures, but this site has some really amazing pictures.

@kiltedpadre In the interests of equal time: photos after the firebombing of Dresden. Man, these are dark, dark, dark. Much death.
Reminds me of the conversation from West Wing:
[Leo has just been told that a target he bombed while in Vietnam was civilian]
Leo McGarry: Why did you tell me that?
USAF Gen. Alan Adamle: Because you could be charged and tried for a war crime.
Leo McGarry: [long pause, very distraught] WHY did you tell me that?
USAF Gen. Alan Adamle: All wars are crimes.https://www.theatlantic.com/photo/2015/02/remembering-dresden-70-years-after-the-firebombing/385445/

It doesn’t help that my aunt and cousin are encouraging it.I got Marion’s carryout for dinner tonight, a kid was having a birthday party there. No masks to be seen...

@qaaaaa Their plan is to go to the Dayton mall location. I suggested getting it for carry-out but apparently that’s not the same.
-
@kiltedpadre sort of thing i expect from golfers.
-
I love that you still took a penalty stroke if your ball was bombed! Talk about dedication to the game!
-
@kiltedpadre Cold, it isn't nearly as good as fresh out of the oven. When I picked up last night, they were boxing it as I swiped my card. That said, I've never eaten it at the restaurant, though I cannot say the ambiance is desirable. I hope they come around to getting carryout.
