GR Yaris is cheaper than a GTI and significantly cheaper than a Type R
-
Hmmmm....
-
This is the way.
(also, very jealous we don't get it in NA here, hopefully the corolla with the same drivetrain is fun)
-
Yeah, they might now finally sell a Corolla that's more fun than my XRS, only took them 15 damn years...
-
@exage03040 I'll admit I'll still be surprised it actually ever happened (if it actually still does).
-
@distraxi when do you take it home?
-
I REALLY wish they'd bring it over here to North America, but they took away the Yaris, and the one we had wasn't even the current one, and was just a tarted up Mazda....not that I have anything against the 2, but I'd much rather have just actually had the 2...
-
@distraxi
The Yaris GR is nice but a bit smaller than the Golf.
While the Golf is much more expensive than the Yaris, there is also the Skoda Octavia vRS. Same engine as the Golf, larger than the Golf.
Price falls between the Yaris and the Golf but with many dealerships offering prices below that of the Yaris.
For me, the Octavia wins. It's got pep but also space and practicality.
-
@distraxi I googled the MSRP this morning (before reading this), and it’s expected to start at the price of a GTI Autobahn. Not sure what makes that cheaper.
-
I don't think they compete with either though. Those cars are both a lot bigger than a Yaris, and FWD. I don't think the Yaris is a hot hatch- having drive wheels unlike the normal model disqualifies it IMO (no, the Golf R is not a hot hatch either). It competes with a hypothetical Fiesta RS, Up R, or Fit VTM-4 R.
-
@exage03040 Agree. In weighing out practicality and my budget as a father of 3 kids 7-14 yrs old, this may work out for me. I want something faster than the regular corolla, but I don't need to go as extreme (or $) as a Civic Type R. If this thing comes in and compares well with a Civic Si, it's a win in my book.
-
@svend But I already have one of those. Two in a row would be dull. Besides, if I actually was to buy one it’d be as a replacement for the GT86 (Adrenalin pump and occasional second DD) rather than the Octavia (main DD).
From experience, the Octavia’s not a “toss it round just for the heck of it” car anyway - they’re fast enough but the driver us too isolated from the road, and the extra weight in the rear relative to a GTI is noticeable.
-
@qaaaaa There’s not really a direct equivalent, no. The closest would be a WRX or Evo from 3 or 4 generations back.

Two in a row would be dull.Lol. I'm on my third Superb in a row.

It recently scored much better than the Golf GTi when tested head to head.
-
@notsomethingstructural Different countries. Here a Yaris starts at $54990 and a GTI at 56990 (NZD, so x 0.7 for USD). Type R is in the 60s.

Not by me
. I’ve owned both (though admittedly the Golf was a mk5, but I can’t imagine they’ve made the mk8 worse) and while the Octy is certainly more practical (and cheaper) the Golf was more fun on a windy road.

@Distraxi Go full send and get the Rallye version!
-
@silentbutnotreallydeadly They're not offering that over here. One spec only, with not a lot of options other than trim add-ons. Not sure if it equates to RoW base model or one of the sexier verions.

The GR Rallye version has (in addition to the GR) Torsen diffs at both ends, BBS wheels and some other garnish...
-
@silentbutnotreallydeadly It Looks like that's the version we're getting as standard. Though you wouldn't know it from looking at TNZ's website
-
@distraxi Love the spelling in the headline. Yep...it looks like TNZ has picked the full of fruit specification only...
-
I'm conflicted - I don't like the fact that living in Canada means the GR is unavailable but on the other hand I like the fact I don't live where $60,000 Canadian is the price of a GTI (and yes I am comparing the prices with all taxes included in Canada).

That's life at the other end of the world...there are considerable other benefits.
Mind you here in Oz, a GTI can be had from around AU$53,000 drive away for the basic spec with no packages.

I know that UK prices will always seem high compared to the US and Canada because the taxes are included in their posted price and not in ours, but when I checked I found that if I paid full list and all taxes here in BC for a GTI like the one in that ad it would be over $15,000 cheaper! That's pretty substantial.

@nowhere But think how much you’d save by not having to invest in winter tyres 🥴
