Tesla shutting down Model X and S production

It's only for 18 days. Of course their stock will rise probably rise 20% tomorrow. Since their products seem to be following traditional model sales declines, are they going to come out with redesigned models?

I've seen this make the news rounds and it confused me. Automakers pausing production for a few weeks this time of year is completely normal.
Part of it I'm sure is just that everything Tesla does is newsworthy for some reason. Not hating on them, just observing.

@jminer It gets the clicks

From experience in several industries and this is totally un-newsworthy, most likely taking advantage of "natural downtime" availability to retool and do some other maintenance on the lines.

@jminer Tesla isn't considered a normal car company. They are also forecasting increases in sales/production and shutting down two manufacturing lines is not something a company who is is projecting aggressive sales would be doing. Also, most new car retooling is done during late summer before new models come out in fall. And with covid related shutdowns earlier in the year, most manufacturers are not shutdown unless they are experiencing parts shortages.
The point is, Tesla is just like other car company that have model cycles. The fact they haven't updated these models is impacting their future growth potential due to stale products.
@krustywantout Tesla absolutely has update cycles, but they're not tied to model years, is the trick. So, if an update requires the line to be shut down, they'll do it right immediately when they want to deploy it, instead of waiting for a model year changeover.
@krustywantout Wait, what? He's asking for volunteers to come in and work to do deliveries during the furlough ? I'm assuming that's with pay, right? Because doing unpaid volunteer work for your employer doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
I mean, I've done it, but that was also while I was working for a large nonprofit, and was one of the least sketchy things I did during my employment there. Kicking out and blacklisting gay teenagers, maintaining secret files of suspected pedophiles, and scamming money from the local United Way would be the sketchier ones.

Well there is a big update coming for the Model S in the form of the Plaid version (supposed to arrive late 2021) which will involve it moving to a tri-motor design and probably a move to a structural battery pack using 4680 cells.
I wouldn't be surprised if the shutdown will involve making some preperatory changes to facilitate this planned update
