Mazda's new "Rugged" "Outdoorsy" Crossover- the CX50
-
This is not the RWD Inline six replacement to the CX5 (That will be the CX 70). Nothing ground breaking here, looks to be an in-betweener built on the CX30 platform slotting in between that and the CX-5 with similar size but supposedly lower wider and more cargo space.
Has the usual 2.5NA and Turbo engines, AWD standard, same ol' 6 speed auto and the newer infotainment from the Mazda3
https://insidemazda.mazdausa.com/press-release/mazda-reveals-all-new-cx-50/Not bad, going after Subaru I see. Good luck to them, they have a 150K sales a year target- https://www.motor1.com/news/547709/mazda-cx50-us-sales-2022/

@kingt I almost always like the way Mazda's look. To me they always look less cluttered and more upscale than their competition.
-
Looks like a Subaru Outback Wilderness, BEFORE fire damage melted the fenders.
I like it.
-
@orneryduck There's a Subaru'd CX5 in the 2022 version for overseas markets but I think the Cx50 looks better for the intended look
-
@tripper The Kodo aesthetic has worked so well for them, except maybe on the CX-9 where the proportions are just a little off (but still better than anything Toyota has made in that time, visually)
Being a smaller company without the Ford backing they are clearly behind on some tech but I will say that the 6spd auto, IME, is still a good transmission and the engines may not be world beaters but are dead reliable. Interiors are nicer than the price might suggest and to exteriors are just fantastic compared to the direct competition.

@zaphod-s-heart-of-gold Agree. I tried to get my wife in a CX-5 when we bought the Forester but she wanted the Forester and HAD to have a stick. I think you could get a stick on the CX5 then (2016/17) but only on the completely stripped FWD variant.
-
@kingt They'll run out of numbers soon
-
@kingt The Mazda crosstrek
-
@kingt
So in other words, a worthy entry into the pseudo-rugged-marketed CUV class. -
@tripper I agree. The front end is wonderful.
-
@zaphod-s-heart-of-gold wait, they still have a 6 speed auto? No 8 speed?
Pass.
-
the 3rd pic makes it look like a Jeep Cherokee, probably its target market.
-
Just the fact that it doesn't have a garbage CVT automatically makes this a better choice than the Forester/Outback.
-
@sovande Yes, it's older tech but is a very good transmission for what it's expected to do. My wife has it in her 2016 Mazda3 and it does everything you want an automatic transmission to do - no lag, no holding gears for the sake of mileage, no clunkiness to it. It's smooth and unobtrusive which I will take any time. And highway mileage in her car is still in the high 30s.
-
@tripper When my wife (then a fairly new girlfriend) was looking at cars I thought she would be happy in a CX-5. She was driving an '04 Mazda3 with bad brakes and suspension and I figured she would go CUV route. She looked at the CX-3 despite my objections and didn't buy it because of the cupholder location (good decision for the wrong reason) and decided on the newer 3. I wish I had pushed harder for her to get the soul red but otherwise made a good choice. The car has been flawless for 5 years and almost 70k miles
-
@kingt That roof rack because of course.
-
@hammerheadfistpunch said in Mazda's new "Rugged" "Outdoorsy" Crossover- the CX50:
@kingt The Mazda crosstrek
Except available with an engine actually capable of moving it at a reasonable pace (2.5T) and a real transmission instead of the CVT rubberband.
-
@kingt Overall pretty nice. BUT the vents. Fake vents front and rear = no, plus the odd center one inside.
-
@kingt I'm a big fan of the green with black accents
-
@zaphod-s-heart-of-gold I mean the 3 speed in my El Camino works too but...
I hear you, it's just weird to not see an 8 speed these days.
-
@sovande I don't know that Mazda has the money to design a new transmission right now. If the ZF is available in a transverse transaxle that would probably be an ideal scenario but again what's the cost of adapting that to their lineup? I'm guessing not exactly cheap and I don't know what the real world advantage of it is.
-
@zaphod-s-heart-of-gold I would imagine the real world advantage would be increased fuel economy.
-
@kingt Kia Telluride style-chunkiness + Subaru wheel arches and roof-rackiness, but it comes with Mazda fuel economy and an available turbo?
This could be Mazda’s coolest (to mainstream buyers) car in decades. I want one too. This is the best “rugged” looking crossover ever.
-
@milky those fake vents are a great place to install some little light pods/bars though.
-
@hammerheadfistpunch Or forester? Hmmm....
