I'm selling everything - Advice on a used car?
-
Well, the time has come to sell all of things that I worked so hard to obtain. On the chopping block are a 2015.5 Volvo V60 which will hopefully go to Carvana by week's end, a 1987 El Camino which will hopefully go to an aspiring redneck, and my boat, a 1979 Tripp Angler which will hopefully find its way to someone with the cash and desire to keep it floating.This purge of three things I happen to really like owning will mean I need a new vehicle. Something cheap, something that can carry a bike and which only needs to drive about 6,000 miles a year. I am leaning towards a minivan or a shitty pickup truck. A Volvo xc70 is also on the list. Basically it needs to be able to hold a bike, hold gear for a weekend of camping and make it to and from work. I'm all ears for any suggestions anyone may have. I would love to keep the cost of something new to about $9,000 of possible.
If anyone wants a car or boat, let me know.
Volvo V60 - $18,215
El Camino - $7,200 (obo)
Boat - $25,000 -

@sovande
I need more details on this...

-
@qaaaaa I'm amazed at how well that geometry works. The bike isn't even at an angle
-
@qaaaaa I assume there's a big red post-it over the open roof button.... I'd hate to hit that by accident
-
@tekamul I really want an RF. If I had one, I would just pull the fuse for the top down mechanism. I'll never understand why there isn't a true coupe ND. (I mean, I do understand, but I refuse to accept it)
-
@sovande Generally, I'd bet you could buy a better minivan than a beater pickup for that money. Bonus, bike rides inside vehicle.

I feel like this is a bonus for road bikes, but maybe not so much for mountain bikes. A little dust can be handled, but mud gets to be a problem.
-
@qaaaaa Looks like they can also help you out if you want to go a little upmarket:
Personally though, my cell phone mount keeps falling off my windshield, so I'm suspicious of suction cups at the moment...
-
@qaaaaa I'm 6'4 and can't drive a Miata.
-
@drvantraveler this is my thought too. But I don't want to take the front wheel off, so don't know if a minivan will work.
-
@facw Why stop at an Alfa, might as well keep going up market to an Aston! Great for offroading too

Have anything against a Honda Fit? They're fun to drive, roomy, and hilariously practical.

I was actually thinking about my Autozam!!
-
@tripper I don't have anything against a Miata other than it's too small for me to drive and too impractical for me to own.
A Honda Fit is a fine car, but smaller than I am interested in.
-
@sovande I used to camp with my wife out of a Saab 9-3. Bikes, tent, food, gear for two people and a dog. You'll have to go light but anything is possible with those requirements.
I suggest a 9-3X Aero.
-
@sovande I'd assume it would fit easily? Your bike is bigger than mine (I'm only 5'9"), but my bikes fit fine in my parents XC70 with the seats down. As long as your handlebars are narrower than the height of the roof, you should just be able to slide it in there. In a minivan it seems like you could even wheel it in upright if you had something to secure it. Sadly my front wheel has to come off to get my bike in my S60.
-
@sovande You say that, but I know plenty of 6'+ people who fit well in NCs and NDs. But I maintain that they're terrible "only" cars.
-
@future-next-gen-s2000-owner neat cars, but I'd rather own something from a company still producing cars available in this market.
-
@qaaaaa
Soooo hoping there is a wheelchair adaption of this possible. I have research to do. -
@facw yeah, I would settle for the roof of a Volvo, probably.
-
@sovande It's mostly GM in the engine and trans. Live dangerously!

Ah well then lemme put a plug in for our Subaru (2017 3 pedal Forester). It uses a little oil, like they do, and it's sparse on creature comforts. However, it was cheap, it fits a family of 3 and two huge dogs, can tow a little bit and gets decent milage. We take it camping and all kinds of shit, it's awesome.
I also love working on it, things are so easy to to do.

Easily dealt with in my experience, but you do indeed have to consider it in your plans.
