DOTS: The Cars of Savannah
-
I spent the weekend in the beautiful port city of Savannah, Georgia. Established back in 1733 on the Savannah River, it's the oldest city in Georgia and still an important industrial center. But the reason some of my friends and I went through great trouble to be there over the weekend isn't its busy container port but rather its famous old downtown.
River street along the Savannah River retains its original cobblestones from the 1700s and is thus not very good to drive on.
That didn't stop this Pontiac GTO driver though. It's been a while since I've seen one that wasn't totally thrashed beyond redemption. Or seen one at all for quite a while.
Some @Just-Jeepin bait here. This teal XJ seems right at home here.
A questionable contrast color for some already questionable modifications.
TourX! It's been months since I've seen one and I saw three in a week and two on this trip. Very strange. I do like these wagons quite a lot.
The only thing dumber than the Murano Cross Cabriolet is a Cross Cabriolet trying to be used as intended. It somehow looks worse with the top down.
A subtle nicely modded Sonoma. I don't see many of these anymore and the ones I do see certainly aren't this clean.
So, should you go to Savannah? Of course. They've got good restaurants, a great atmosphere, tons of history, and lots to do.
Yes, this is not a real paddle wheeler. The paddle is purely for show.
The old part of the city has an interesting grid with lots of small squares and they all have fascinating towering old churches on them. This one is the Cathedral Basilica of St John the Baptist near the ancient Colonial Park Cemetery.
We stayed in nearby Hilton Head for two nights and could walk to the beach. Of course, it was too cold to want to get in the water, but walking on the beach was fun.
So, which of these cars would you drive home in? I found the city more interesting than the cars I ran across with one exception (to be continued). It felt good to be back among the live oaks of coastal Georgia.

@whoistheleader Teal XJ. If you’re going to have a non-Wrangler modern Jeep, that’s the one.
-
@whoistheleader I actually lived in Savannah for a year and my sister still lives there.
It was a fun town for sure, but there wasn't enough young professionals for me to stay.
-
@e90m3 Seems like leaving worked out quite excellent for you.
-
@jordan Leaving worked out extremely well for me. The main impetus for me leaving Savannah was to meet someone, and that's worked out incredibly well for me.
-
@whoistheleader mmm……..Monaro
-
@pip-bip I like them but I don't trust them enough to actually want to own one. Neat though.
-
@just-jeepin I figured as much. I didn't get a picture of the TJ with the windshield down. I never see that feature actually used.
-
@e90m3 I can see what you mean. Lots of retirees. A fun place to enjoy if you have people there with you at least. The group ended up being like half the size it was supposed to be but it was still fun.
-
@whoistheleader The only trucks I like are 80s-early 90s F150s, but I really like that Sonoma. Not wild about the wheels, but the rest of it forgives such an easily-remedied mistake.
-
@phenotyp Something about that white and blue two tone and tasteful lowering does it. It looks both cool and useful.
-
@whoistheleader It's just so clean. Gm's trucks look so much better with the old square sealed beam lights, before they went to the squinty split lights.
-
@phenotyp The only problem is that then you have sealed beams. Fortunately there are aftermarket solutions.
-
@whoistheleader Upvoted for making fun of the Murano Cross Cabriolet. #poorlifechoices
-
@whoistheleader I can play DOTS Savannah too! Nice town to escape the snow.
-
@napoli This is literally like the second one I've ever seen actually being used as a convertible. Most of the people who bought them seem to not even use them as intended.

What snow?
Though it certainly did get colder here while I was gone. And, oh, yes, that's a very yellow thing right there.
-
@whoistheleader I got some snow when I lived there.
-
@e90m3 It's been too long since the ATL got a half decent snow. Maybe this winter. . .
-
@whoistheleader We got a week off the second semester of my third year (spring 2011) thanks to snow.
