At 170 km/h, the ten-speed transmission prefers to be in 8th or 9th gear, depending on the wind. This is probably due to the amount of power the V8 needs to be making to maintain that speed.
I uh, figured this out on the internet.

@cb fortunately an RCMP horse can't run at 170 km/h

In horrifying news, though, a horse makes 15 horsepower, so it's more possible than previously thought.

@cb
Did they catch you? -
@silentbutnotreallydeadly Technically yes!
-
@cb that’s why I like 4 speed manuals. 4th is good from 35 mph to your aerodynamic limits.
-
@cb
Perhaps you need a Mustang then? -
@silentbutnotreallydeadly The Queen won't pay for that one.
Okay, technically yes, but no.
-
@cb I remember at least one generation Viper had max velocity in 5th. 6th was just for highway mileage for EPA, wind was too great to power through in 6th at that speed, just like you said
-
Well sure. My E55 would hit 170 in 4th. I estimate 9th would have been somewhere near 600kms/hr, but it's factory limited to 5 speeds.
-
@cash-rewards C5 Z06 hits vmax in 5th as well (around 170mph), 6th gear is for highway cruising. Also, the T56 has a weak 6th gear (don't remember why tho right now)

90s Vipers hit top speed in 4th AFAIK. 5th and 6th were both fuel economy overdrives. Final drive ratio was a relatively tall 3.07
My 2018 Mustang hits the speed limiter near the top of 4th gear as well. Has enough power to pull 5th. Also has double overdrive like the OG Vipers but it has a much shorter final drive ratio of 3.73

@cb IIRC the test done to determine the measurement for horsepower was done with a donkey. So technically it's asspower, not horsepower.

You know what, that explains the butt dyno test.

I believe the final gear is the most highly loaded, so if a manual transmission has a weak point, it will show up there.
The Datsun 5 speed has a problem where the 5th gear retention nut would back off, requiring a couple of tacks to “fix” that. -
@classicdatsundebate I think my dads car has a 5 speed from a 280zx turbo.
-
@highlander
That one and the diesel truck 5 speeds didn’t have that problem. Only the earlier 5 speeds. -
@italianjobr53 At 5600 rpm in 5th, the driver's window can pop out. Not that I would know.
-
@jordan lol
-
@italianjobr53 allegedly it's quite the pressure change.
