We are approaching that time...
-
Our kitty cat is at least fourteen years old, and has had a few health issues starting a few years ago. UTIs, kidney problems, hyperthyroid, arthritis... She needs medication for her bladder and thyroid.
This past week, she has been lethargic, stationary, eating less and less. We've attempted some coaxing and upping the ante on irresistible treats and so forth. No luck. She also is losing the ability to hold her bladder. Since she will die without that thyroid med, we've had to force feed her (goo and a tube). Not cruel, but incredibly sad. It's like she's on a hunger strike. Or almost like, "I'm done, thank you." She feels frail and seems to be hurting to the touch.
Well, after giving her meds and food earlier today, we left for a celebration of life (tough weekend!). We come back and check in on her. Still hasn't moved. We pick her up and pet her, then set he down and prep the food. She starts to walk away and drops like a sack a potatoes. She can barely move her legs. She cannot lift her tail. It is at this point that my wife starts crying.
We've been trying to see our vet since last week before things really turned, but everyone (and ours) is hella booked out or not taking new pets at all, though I'm not sure it would have or does matter. We are aware of her history and fear she's a little old to turn things around. Also my wife used to be a vet tech way back in the day so she has some experience on the matter. Her godmother is a retired veterinarian as well.
So... May be saying bye to our little Spoke here before Monday.

@dr-zoidberg
I hope that's not the case and she starts to show signs of improvement. Take care all. -
@dr-zoidberg very sorry to hear that. There's not much that's worse than watching a cat's last few weeks. Keep her company, and I really hope things turn around.
-
@dr-zoidberg that's just awful, fingers crossed she gets better.
It sounds like she's lived her best life with you two though and has been quite happy. If it is the end I hope she passes quickly.

@dr-zoidberg I’m really sorry to hear. If you’re in the mood for a “there’s still hope” anecdote (ok if it’s a no)... my mother in law has a cat, around the same age, outdoor kitty. Got some sort of parasite (don’t recall) which threw him off so bad he ended up with a hormonal imbalance (not thyroid but similar). Wouldn’t eat, eventually needed surgery. No appetite. Totally listless. Wouldn’t touch even tuna heated up on the stove for probably 2 months, so they had to force it down through a tube in his neck. And just one day he woke up and started back on track. They were positive they would lose him, they were going back and forth about how much more they were willing to do this to the poor cat. And one day he just decided to turn it around. That was a few years ago now.
I don’t know what will happen with your kitty bud. I’m not convinced even god knows. But if you are really on the ropes and wanna pray for a miracle, then pray for a miracle. I’ve seen it happen.
Wishing you luck. You’ll be in my thoughts.

@dr-zoidberg I have nothing to say other than that really sucks and my thoughts are with you.
-
@dr-zoidberg
Hopefully, it goes easy for you all. -
Give her lots of scritches and all her favorite treats. It’s the best way to say goodbye.
-
@dr-zoidberg That sucks man. Got me in the "feels" over on this side of the screen. That is the worst part of having a pet in one's life. We outlast most of them. And it is fucking HARD at the end. But man they are worth the joy they bring. I hope she turns the corner for you, but if not, say goodbye as best you can. There's just no good words in english to say for this type of situation.
-
@dr-zoidberg No words for you other than sympathies. Hopefully it’s just a false alarm.
-
Sorry to hear
-
@dr-zoidberg Damn that's rough. My last cat that passed went similarly. Do they have any vets that make house calls? I'll never put a pet down any other way and it's not really any more expensive.
Good luck. -
@dr-zoidberg Awe, poor thing
-
@dr-zoidberg Oh buddy...I am so sorry to hear this....all you can do is give her all the love and pets you can
-
@dr-zoidberg Poor little kitty. That's how our Cobalt went out (feeding tube) before he gave up on life and we had to put him down.
-
I am so sorry to hear about her.
-
@dr-zoidberg
That's too bad. Sorry for the kitty. I hope the rest of you are doing ok. -
Ah that’s tough… sorry to hear about that
-
I'm so sorry, we went through the same thing with our oldest cat Pippa last year, they compensate for a long time then just fall off.
There's few things that make you feel like a grown-up more than having to deal with a dying pet - it sucks. -
@dr-zoidberg Heartbreaking, man. I’ve been there, know exactly what y’all are going through. All you can do is take things as they come and give the little furball all the love you can, which you guys are definitely doing already.
-
All I have are virtual hugs to send. So sorry that you’re losing your longtime friend.
-
Ouch. Very sorry to hear. Best of luck with the immediate future.
