I have an idea to make over sized LEGO bricks out of wood for Christmas decoration out in the front yard.

Going through the scale up measurements of a normal 2x4 LEGO brick, I decided I'll can make a huge brick in the size of 3 feet long, 16" wide, and 1 foot tall. With 2 inch thick studs screwed on top. Paint one brick green, another red, and maybe another one white.

I really wanted to make it 4 feet long, but then the brick will have to be 2 feet wide to keep the scale accurate. It would be more trouble to store the bricks (about 20 inches of room under house)

With the 3 foot long bricks I can use a 4 - 5 inch hole saw and use the circle that would be drilled out for the studs.
Just put some wood putty to hide the drill bit hole.

I was worried the decoration 1 foot high would be unnoticeable in the front yard, so I use some scrap wood and made a skeleton brick frame 1 foot high. Placed it in the front yard (forgot to take pic) and it was quite noticeable.
Even saw a few cars slow down, probably thinking WTF am I doing with a crab trap in the front yard 😛

I will use 3/4" treated plywood to make the actual bricks. Then a 2x6 to drill circles out of for the studs.

Kind of the layout im going for? stack two bricks on top each other, another leaning on the side, and maybe a 2x2 brick off to the side.
Then maybe paint Merry on one brick and Christmas on one below. IDK yet.

@brickman alternatively, make a mold for bricks that are 10% larger and hand those suckers out like candy. Just big enough to not work with any other bricks, and just small enough to go undetected.

And here I thought you were going to advise him to make a giant mold so he could create giant plastic bricks. They would be a lot lighter, for certain. Of course, he'd need a giant vacuum table to use the mold. Or maybe he makes the bricks out of some other material. Perhaps fiberglass? Or maybe paper mache' so he could recycle it and make new bricks each year. That would make storage a lot easier.

            Hmmmm. Lots of options here.

Never discount the possibility that you might live through it.

@bicyclebuck fiber glass would seem like a good idea. Cover the wood block with fiberglass to make a mold, then use the mold to make resin bricks. Use a smaller rectangle in the mold so the middle is empty.

Still going to make it out of wood, but I'll keep that in mind. Could build a LEGO village in life size bricks 😄

Go for the giant bricks. Claes Oldenburg approves.

For a second there, I thought you meant pour candy into the brick mold to make Lego suckers ...which is evil in its own way!
