Britney Spears: Is This News?
-
I'm having a difficult time finding any farks to give about this.
-
@rusty-vandura I find it difficult to have farks to give for most 'news'.
-
@rusty-vandura I don't even care enough to click on the link
-
@rusty-vandura I feel like it’s tabloid news but still important. The situation, from what I read, was absurd. Hopefully things improve for her!
-
@rusty-vandura I don't care exactly, but I do feel bad for young celebrities having to deal with asshole parents/guardians. In fact, it made a good storyline for one of the better Black Mirror episodes...

What’s more concerning to me is that obvious tabloid news is being reported on by actual news outlets. This shit showed up on my NPR feed. But apparently this crap brings in ad revenue. Yes, the societal implications of conservatorships are important, but the vast majority of severely mentally ill people don’t have enough money for anyone to give a shit about their estate.

@rusty-vandura I actually care about this a lot more than the new Broncos. A person gets their freedom vs some cars I'll never afford or want.

@punkgoose17 Like @DipodomysDeserti said, " the societal implications of conservatorships are important", but I also agree with him in the way that this particular case isn't likely indicative of the environment surrounding those legalities as a whole, and is more of a circus vs. leading to actual legislative change.
And it is because of that (and most news following similar trends), that I have a hard time caring much about it.
-
@rusty-vandura it's definitely more national news than the Gabby Petito coverage.
-
@dipodomysdeserti NPR?? Makes it kind of hard to pigeonhole you -- or me -- for our views, doesn't it? People are lazy.

BLASPHEMER!
-
@rusty-vandura Right? NPR and the BBC are my primary news sources. Both still suck about half the time. Very little critical analysis left in reporting (if there ever was any).

Yeah, but you have a much better chance of affording a new Bronco than ending up in a conservatorship. Although now you’ll have an even better chance of being able to afford a subscription to Britt’s upcoming OnlyFans site. Not sure if that’s more desirable than a Bronco.

I think both are drastically over-reported, but I think a human life (and the topic of domestic abuse) is still worth a bit more to society than a rich person’s bank account. The Petito case also literally spanned the entire nation.
God help us if Britt goes missing.
-
@dipodomysdeserti I pay a digital subscription to Wall Street Journal. Some of their commentary I dismiss out of hand, but I assume that some of the liberal bias will be reduced there.

I had to stop and think about who you'd be referencing.

I can't remember what news source, but I did hear a story that did describe why this matters to many of us. The laws for conservatorship can be very favorable to t conservator. It occasionally happens that somebody gets their elderly parents declared as incapable of handling their affairs, and they get conservatorship of their parents estate while their parents are alive. This can be easily abused, and often is. The Spears case sets a precedent limiting the abuse.
Only a few news stories explain how this sets precedent and how the laws affect the public in general.
I don't have an interest in Spears herself. However, I do care how laws are interpreted and changed. The laws Spears' father abused are frequently abused, and this case may start a shift. It took the abuse affecting a pop star before anybody cared.

This. This is why I posted my question here. Thank you.
