Shenanigans at the Pizza Parlor
-
I went all-out last night and ordered pizza for the extended family. Three large pizzas, all loaded down with toppings. I even had it delivered! Ooooo, fancy!
They said it would be about an hour, so we waited. And waited. And waited.
After an hour and a half, I called to find out where my pizza might be. Poor guy on the other end said it was sent to us over an hour ago. I asked what the delivery guy said. He told me they have been short-staffed, so they sent it via Door Dash. He also said the Door Dash driver that showed up was a new guy he'd never seen before. He said that the order was marked as delivered.
So, what happened?
I thought they might have dropped it at my neighbor's door. That's happened before, so I walked over to check. He wasn't home, so it would have been sitting on his porch. Nope, no pizza. Did it go to another neighbor? Not likely. We know them all well enough that they would have directed the delivery to out house.
So, now I'm left thinking that the driver just stole it. It's a known problem with Doordash and people are posting about it.
Can I prove it? Nope. I still haven't installed security cameras. Can I get any more information about it or file a complaint? Nope. I didn't order through Doordash, so I have no recourse whatsoever.Thankfully, the guy at the pizza place did the right thing by remaking the order. Then he went above and beyond by refunding the entire purchase price. When he sent the order, it was with their own driver. I reciprocated by tipping the driver half the cost of the pizza. It made his night.
And the neighbors? One of them noticed a red car sitting in front of my house (the delivery driver who actually made it) and called us to report that someone was acting weird.
I'm not sure what took him so long to move on to his next delivery, but I'm happy to know that our neighbors are keeping an eye out for troublemakers in our neighborhood.

That's a thought. The delivery driver was at least my age (lots of gray hair). I assumed he was making some extra cash in retirement. Maybe he's made a career out of menial jobs because of his habits. Who knows....
-
@bicyclebuck Oof at least the pizza guy did right. My door dash experience has been either quicker than I thought it would be or waaaaay longer than I thought it'd be.
-
As a former pizza transportation expert (stoner delivery driver in a clapped out Geo Prizm), it's good to hear they did the right thing. Busy nights at a pizzeria are no joke. There were nights where I drove for 8 hours strait doing deliveries. It's easier than you think to mix up orders. And this was back in the day before cell phones so even less "tracking" than whats available now.
-
@bicyclebuck Awesome that you did the right thing with the tipping and not just pocketing the savings!
-
@sn4cktimes Well, the pizza place made it right. They probably got fucked over by door dash, whose probably the only entity that made any money off this transaction.
Support your local restaurants, people! Don’t let the shitty tech companies cut into their earnings.
-
@dipodomysdeserti True, we tend to try and use a company's delivery people if that's possible. But Skip/DD have basically made that job role at a food place obsolete, sadly.

The pizza place said they are having a hard time finding delivery drivers so they used Doordash to fill in the gap. The guy who came the second time works for the pizza place, not for Doordash.

He deserved a tip either way. I just gave him a lot more than he expected! I had already paid both the bill and the tip, so getting it all back was an unexpected bonus for me. Sharing the good fortune was definitely the right thing to do!

@bicyclebuck I had that DoorDash switch thing happen with my last two orders from two different pizza places. One just left it on the ground in front of the door and walked away, no knock, no door bell, no text or email notification. When I realized it was taking obscenely long, I opened the door to look for the hell of it, and it was there with a lot of bugs getting into it
The other time, the guy seemed to be confused about my house and just stopped in the middle of the street, like the travel lane, not over to the curb, called me on my cell and asked me to walk over and get it out of his back seat, where the pizza box was just sitting loose, not in one of those insulated bags I'm used to seeing
I think I'm just going to either eat out in the restaurant, or drive over and pick a pizza up myself from now on
-
@bicyclebuck we had so many bad experiences with DD and Skip, that we’ve just stopped using them. I’ll go pick up, or we use the restaurants that have their own driver.
We only order out a couple times a month, but still. -
@bicyclebuck Glad to hear they made it right, and glad you have neighbors who keep an eye out. We do too, and it makes a huge difference in peace of mind.
As for Doordash... we don't use them much, but when we do, we have to make a special note that says "Park in street and walk up, do not attempt driveway." I don't want to spend another half hour pulling another one out of my rhododendrons...

Your comment hit home with me. I delivered pizza in high school. One night, I was trying to locate a house on a gravel road and someone came blasting down the lane from the other direction, kicking up a massive cloud of dust. In the haze, I misinterpreted what I was seeing and turned into the ditch instead of the driveway. It took some effort, but I managed to rescue myself eventually. The homeowner didn't even walk out to see what was going on or offer any help. He also didn't offer a tip. That was the last time I delivered to that house.
-
@mark-tucker ...how the?!
-
@baconsandwich I didn't see it happen. Our driveway is treacherous; in fact it claimed the life of a former owner of the house, but it's a straight line. All she had to do was back straight down the way she came (or use the turnaround at the top made for that exact purpose, and go down forward). I was able to pull her back up the hill with my truck (luckily without yanking the front end off), and then I drove it down to the street for her.
