Gary Larson once explain this cartoon. He said that he just intended to imply that a dog would act like a wolf, kill the captured prey, and stand over it and howl. He also said that he was only trying to show the transmission hump on the bottom of the car. Gary Larson didn't think anything of it, and his editor didn't see any problems from the cartoon.

The day after it was published, one of Gary Larson's friends called him and asked why the dog has humping the car. Only then did Gary Larson realize what he had drawn.
