Change my mind ...

I don’t like cars from the big three from 1958. Every other year I can find something I like.
I don’t like the quad headlight layout, I don’t like the style. I think the designers lost their mind, temporarily. Some of these models were great in the mid 50s and early 60’s; even iconic. But not ‘58.
In 1958 they all looked goofy.
Go ahead, show me I’m wrong.

@john-norris You've got my vote. but I don't really like 50's era stuff generally.
-
@john-norris For me, 58 is where designers started to lose the plot, and 59 is where it went off the rails entirely. I appreciate a lot of the designs for being over the top flamboyant and kinda batshit crazy, but theyre not exactly tasteful.
Chrysler was probably the best of the pack in 1958, and, in the inverse of the usual order, their cheapest brand, Plymouth, was the best styled. Probably because, as the cheapest, they didn't overdo the decorations as much
That said, 1958 was the best year for Edsel. At least they were distinctive, the 59s and 60s looked too much like rebadged Fords

@john-norris That 300D is pure awesome sauce
-
@john-norris I can't create a good argument against your premise. (especially since I prefer the styles from 10+ years before or later..)
-
@john-norris hmm. I kinda like this one. What am I looking at?
-
@classicdatsundebate I find it very hard to find fault with any of Virgil Exner's work, at least up until the 1962 models. But that was forced on him by bad market intelligence

If for no other reason:

@john-norris Can't argue with that. Although it is rather demure vs the others in '58
-
@aestheticsinmotion 1958 Chevy Impala
1958 was the only year where the Impala was a unique body style from other Chevy models. -
-
@classicdatsundebate Well, he may have been on pills for awhile there. Couldn't tell if he was sitting in his studio drawing a new Stutz, or down in his basement arguing with his water heater. And when he sobered up, that was already in production
-
I'll give the Corvette and the trucks a pass. Everything else I agree.
-
-
@john-norris '58 was definitely a shit year. The first year of wide-spread quad lights, and ewwwwww. I this the Chevy truck and the Corvette in your pics lol ok fine, but just fine, and everything else there looks like crap. Things started getting better again in '59.
-
@john-norris I don't hate the C1 but I don't love it either...

I totally agree. I can't explain it though.
Not sure what it is, because the 59 Chevy's had plenty of flashy overkill design, excessive shapes and angles, and even the quad headlights. But for some reason I like it.
-
@john-norris I think it just took designers a bit if time to properly incorporate a new design element they'd never been allowed to play with before. I love '59 Chevys. The cats-eye taillights are magnificent. Definitely an over the top design, but it all works together.
-
@john-norris I was with you until you posted an Apache.

I like the '56:
I like the 57:
In '58 they ruined the front:

"I was with you until you posted an Apache."
I'm onboard that the Chevy was less goofy than the Dodge or Ford that I posted.
But what's with that '58 kitchen appliance under the headlights?
