Mangoes, how do they work?
-
The local market had mangoes on sale and I've never eaten a fresh one, so I bought a few.
Dafuq do you do with these things?
I selected the ripest looking one, grabbed a pairing knife and started hacking into it. My initial thought was to go at it avocado-style. Cut a circle around it, then twist in half. That didn't work. So I cut a circle again thinking the first direction was wrong. Quarters didn't work so I cut it once more into 8ths. That also didn't work so I started trying to tear it apart with my fingers.
This allowed me to pull the peel off in the 8ths pretty easily without much waste. Getting the bits of mango away from the pit was not easy though. Eventually I got most of the edible parts off but made a mess, and there was still a lot stuck to the pit.
Is there a good neat and tidy way to cut one up? The one I chopped was definitely ripe because it tasted delicious. Just seems like there should be a trick to do so more easily.

@nermal Unfortunately they're pretty well glued to the pit and you usually can't just remove it. Use a potato peeler for the rind and then carve the flesh off the pit with a knife. You can hold it with a fork so your fingies don't get all slimy.

Cut chunks off and score them, then remove the scored cubes from the peel. This article has nice images:

@nermal usually cut around the pit, then cube it up and invert it around the skin.
Peeling a mango takes a while, then you get mango mush all on your fingers cutting around the pit.
-
You're supposed to cut it into slices with the skin on and remove the flesh like when you are kid and your parents cut up oranges. Not a joke, this is how some more cultured people taught me.
-
@nermal The skin is fine to eat, just bite carefully so you don't eat the pit

This.
Slice off the easy bits on the sides and cube them in the peel, then peel the center section and gnaw on the good stuff around the pit.
It's messy, but the best foods are always messy.

@nermal Imagine the mango is a human, and cut along the left and right sagittal planes leaving about a 1” section in the middle. It takes a bit of practice to know exactly where to cut so you avoid the seed. I then cube the two outer sections without cutting through the skin, and peel the skin away. Next I trim the skin off the center section and eat around the seed.

@dipodomysdeserti ahh yes, this is exactly how I peel humans too! (WTF are we on Reddit right now?)

If you’re sensitive to poison ivy you may want to skip eating the skin. Mango is a relative of poison ivy and the oil (urushiol) is in the skin.

It’s probably safe to eat, but it’s definitely not fine to eat raw. That shit is very fibrous and waxy. Definitely don’t eat it if you’re allergic to poison ivy.

Seems like i'm not doing like anybody else, it's slicing it around from top to bottom around the pit then cut in a rhombus shape around the pit.
I don't have any at the moment but it's how i'm doing it :
It's a wrong way to do it but it's my own wrong way !

@nermal Mangoes are related to peaches, with a large pit surrounded by a thick fleshy layer. Just cut them up as if they were very big peaches.

@nermal while it is true that the skin is fine for most people to eat, be a little careful because it has some chemicals that irritate in the same way as poison oak. Some very sensitive people can get in trouble by eating the skin… my buddy found this out the hard way

@dipodomysdeserti I would not eat Mango skin, I had a co-worker who would eat the skin on Kiwi, if you wash it really well it is almost tolerable.

I eat kiwi skin after a thorough wash, but would not eat mango skin. Way too thick and bitter. I’ve put some in smoothies before, though. If there’s enough protein powder in it you won’t taste the skins.
-
@dipodomysdeserti I use an apple peeler on kiwis. Use the pointy end to dig out the nub at the stem, then just peel and chomp.
Not a fan of kiwi for smoothies though. The seeds separate from the rest of it and make everything all wonky. Bananas, blueberries and strawberries blend the best. Blackberries and raspberries are tasty but the seeds get stuck in your teeth.
