2000km Overdue and the Dealer is Booked Out 2 Weeks

Am I actually going to have to change the oil on the 3 myself?
I've only done like 1 oil change in my life because disposal and a lack of lift is a pain in the ass.
-
@jarrett Are ramps an option?
-
@bbg2d Actually, yeah, they are. I've got a couple 6inch ramps.
-
@jarrett Disposal? Oil comes from the ground, just put it back there
-
@jarrett My local dump will take oil, and some oil change places will take used oil for recycling. Just get a 5 gal bucket with lid or similar from a hardware store and you're set (if you have the tools, catch pan, and new oil/filter)
-
@bbg2d Every car part store near me has an oil recycle container, usually in the back room, just have to ask if you can put yours there. I've never had an issue getting rid of old oil
-
@qaaaaa yup, same
-
@jarrett yeah I'm in that camp too, where I'm googling "how long can a TDI REALLY go between oil changes?"
-
@bbg2d @Qaaaaa I'll have to see if I can offload it to one of those guys. (Dump being the last resort since I go there like once every couple years)
I'm pretty sure our Canadian Tire won't do it anymore after what happened to their last stock of used oil!:

@qaaaaa Popular Mechanics once included a handy diagram for making a home oil disposal area.
As someone that works in the drinking water field I cringe whenever I remember this.
-
@qaaaaa We've had problems with discarding used oil at the AutoZone in my friend's neighborhood before, but it turns out they just had a problem with us bringing in 8 gallon jugs each time. And also wanting the container back. They begrudgingly emptied the container and returned it to us a few times over the course of a year, but then finally told us to knock-it-off...
At one point we showed-up 5 minutes before closing on a Saturday, and as they saw us approaching they turned-off the store lights. There were still customers in the store... We decided it best to come back another time...

@boxer_4 Maybe donuts or pizza could mend fences?

Edit: @kiltedpadre beat me
-
@jarrett advanced auto parts will take the used stuff. I just get those leaktite buckets and throw em inside the door.

The Outback I used to own didn't require a jack to change the oil and the city garbage collection takes oil and used filters.
-
@jarrett Do you have other options besides the dealer? It is a pain in the ass to do it in your own - I’ve been doing it for the Abarth and the RDX, but I go to BrakesPlus for the Tundra as it’s cheap enough.
-
Order yourself a Fumoto valve. They're not expensive, they make oil changes 1000x cleaner. You'll still have to get under the car every time you want to change it, but you will pull off the old drain plug only once (I'd keep it in a plastic baggie in the glove box, just in case), install the valve, and every time after you can use the hose to drain directly into a bottle instead of a pan.

@qaaaaa none of the parts stores near me do, but the state Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control has oil recycling tubs in the parking lot of their office. Which are padlocked on weekends and after hours, even though they're totally self serve and unsupervised during the week anyway
-
@kiltedpadre True story, my dad apparently did this when he was 16. Until grandpop came home from work one day and saw it happening and freaked the eff out
-
@nth256 Those looks so great. I really need to look into one. It would make for a much cleaner oil change.
-
@musashi66 I used to go to a place, but they changed management and the trust level isn't quite there. I'm sure there are hundreds of places that can do it, but I have trust issues.
-
@nth256 I'm not supposed to spend oodles of money on the 3 gosh darnit!
-
@jarrett - It's like half an oodle. Maybe one oodle, tops.
-
You don't need a lift to change the oil. Ramps will suffice
There's also those oil change places. Since you're using km, are you in Canada? Does Canadian Tire do oil changes?
-
Update:
I've been defeated because Donkey Kong must have put on my drain plug last time. Couldn't get it off. Then I figured if the plug was that bad, the filter would probably be worse.
