Stretched van RV

Not stretched like you’re thinking. This is stretched in width.
I’ve only known these existed for a couple years, and I think someone at that Jalop website did an article a few months ago. I’ve never actually seen one in person.
My understanding is that someone decided they needed a wider than average van to be used as an ambulance. Instead of the simpler solution of a box added to a chassis-cab a company decided they’d cut Dodge vans down the middle and make them 14” wider.
wide body RV
While I’ve read the original reason was for an ambulance someone along the lines decided it would make a more roomy class B motor home.
This one is actually for sale not far from me.
Other than just looking odd the biggest giveaway that you’re looking at one of these is the two-piece windshield and the filler panels beside the grille. -
@kiltedpadre Thats bordering the max legal width for highways. What a pain that would be to drive.
-
@hammerheadfistpunch It would be an absolute nightmare in a lot of the areas I’d actually want to camp.
-
@hammerheadfistpunch Just straddle two lanes

@kiltedpadre I'm not so worried about this thing's width. The steering geometry might be a mess though. Do you think they changed anything to make Ackerman work right on the wider track? I'm guessing, no.
-
@just-a-scratch I’ve never read anything that was enough of a deep dive into these to know what all was changed between them and a standard van.
I’d be surprised if they did any more than the bare minimum though.
