No lowballerz! I know what I got and it's a POS...
-
So my Jetta Sportwagen needs a bunch of work but has reached the point where it no longer makes sense to keep putting money into it so we bought a new car (proper post inbound). We originally planned to scrap the VW for a $1,000 credit towards an EV plus whatever tax receipt we get for donating it.
However I need to wait for my used EV credit to go be approved (6-8wks) before I can claim the scrappage credit. Meanwhile it's street parked costing is $40 a week and still on the insurance (which is obscene for 3 cars)
So listed it on marketplace per the ad below, didn't clean it or even take the crap out of it - just sent it.
I thought I might be asking an unreasonable price as it's guaranteed to need a bunch of work to pass safety inspection but given the crazy market right now maybe not, ive had 2 enquiries so far. Although when they see the fist size rust holes in the rockers next to the frame it's possible they'll change their minds.
"
$1,600 price is FIRM - I can scrap it for a $1k EV credit plus a tax receipt so this is the least it's worth the time to sell.
Sold as-isThe Good:
Engine starts and runs well. Just did an oil change, Battery is brand new.
No accidents: GLI/GTI front grille swap but still have the original. The bad:
Manual transmission: clutches and shifts into gears fine but the cables connecting the shifter to the gearbox need replacement. Shifter does not spring back to center anymore.
Brakes: needs new brake pads at all 4 corners and rotors are rusted from sitting.Tires: needs 2x new winter tires as rear pair are worn out and cracking. Fronts are 1yr old Michelin X-ice.
Includes factory alloy wheels with (2019) BF Goodrich all seasons. But will need to buy a full set of lugnuts as the originals got lost in a move and the steels use a different size.Rust: rockers are shot underneath and starting to show through the driver's door sill.
Panoramic sunroof: very cool but sticks sometimes. I replaced the sunshade so that works well.

@zipfuel I mean, as I read that, it runs, drives, shifts (albeit some extra labor), needs brakes, tires... Try to find a runner for under $2k right now.
-
@zipfuel good luck with the sale. I imagine you'll get it. I'm with @Dr-Zoidberg it runs and drives, it's worth $2k most places now.

So you two are saying he needs to raise his price because even a POS is worth more right now.
-
@zipfuel depends a lot on where you live but that’s a 3k car in Ohio. Should be gone tomorrow.
-
This is perfect candidate for a rallycross car. SEND IT
-
@qaaaaa comparables are between 2k and 5k usually with more mileage but described as in "great condition" and many have been marked down.
Problem is in Ontario it has to pass a safety inspection before the new owner can register it. That means they'll have to do brakes and sort the tires out at least. I dunno if the inspection cares if it shifts reliably.I figure it needs a grands worth of work minimum for me to happy driving it this winter and it'd still be rotting from the inside out.
We'll see, I may have underpriced it but I just saw my insurance renewal and ouch, it's gotta go asap. -
@i86hotdogs the thought did occur to me (or ice racing) but I'd still have to fix everything to make it usable, then pay to store it somewhere and it's too heavy to tow behind my Pathfinder so I'd have to keep it insured and legal. I think if I ever do something like that I'd be better off with something tiny I can trailer.
-
Brakes cost basically nothing if you do them yourself. And I already have too many sets of VW wheels and tires laying around. I'd buy this bad boy as a beater in a heartbeat.
A comparable car where I live is like $2.5k and will have worse rust, more miles, and at least one scary problem.
-
@zipfuel Ah, the joy of inspections. When I lived in NE Ohio, my friends would go over to PA, where not that clapped stuff fails inspection (allegedly anything with a rust hole larger than a quarter, even if it's near a drain hole, will fail), buy it cheap, and have a great daily. That certainly complicates things.
-
@miss-mercedes I mean, I love a clapped dub perhaps more than you, but I'm going to be honest, a "fist sized rust hole" counts as a "scary problem"
-
@qaaaaa Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin people drive cars with way worse rust holes than that. I just discovered that the Dodge Grand Caravan that I run on the Gambler 500 has rockers of chicken wire, construction foam, and Bondo.
Glad I paid a whole $900 for it or I'd be pissed.
-
List it in a state that doesn't do inspections. Rust hole issue is irrelevant at that point.
-
@qaaaaa Nah. Those are common sights when you grow up in the rust belt.
-
@future-next-gen-s2000-owner NEO salts the hell out of their roads. That doesn't make it not sketchy.
-
@future-next-gen-s2000-owner ~500km to Quebec (who are probably stricter and French) and ~2000km to Manitoba. I'm gonna have to stay local here...
-
@zipfuel As someone who just sold a rusty car, I suggest you get used to reading emails that simply say "500"
-
@ibrad that's what the first slightly aggressive ad line is for and so far most of what I've got are "is this available?" form inquiries.
Someone on the buy and sell group I listed it in thought they knew better and I'd only get $300 for scrap but actually kinda disappointed by the lack of lowballs as I had some quality gif responses lined up.
-
@zipfuel Oh I got plenty of 'is it available' emails too.
The guy I sold it to was actually a lowballer that I ignored. After he sent a "?' email I told what the asking price was and we actually negotiated to an acceptable deal. Which he then tried to reneg on when he arrived. At that point, after he got a ride 3 hour from home to buy it, I kind of had the upper hand in negotiations.
Good luck!
-
@zipfuel GTI/GLI grill has got to be worth at least 3 fiddy extra.
-
@ibrad they get the "yes it's available" button press back. I've had a bunch of guys (appliance varmints mainly) show up and offer $10 less, it's nice when you have the upper hand.
-
@veearrrsix funny enough from the forums I learned the standard shiny chrome ones are more valuable. If I end up scrapping it I'm selling the old grille separate.

b) -gear shifter/selector movement is stiff or does not enable all gear positions to be freely engaged or selected.
So depending how stiff it is I guess it's a judgement call on the mechanics part. If the same mechanic will be doing the work, that might affect this judgement.
If you're not driving it, you can call your insurance and remove PLPD and leave theft and fire. That should reduce your cost to well under $10 a month
Maybe swap back the stock grille and sell the GTi grille separately? If you wanted it for yours, someone else wants it for theirs.

Yeaaaah it'd totally fail on that, it's like stirring a bucket of rocks atm

@zipfuel Well you didn't hear it from me!
