Coal rebounding under Joe Biden!

I eagerly await the Fox News article praising President Biden for bringing coal back in a big way this year.
Joe Biden is just delivering on what Trump couldn't, they should be excited. Right?

@qaaaaa Nobody digs anymore. It's more of just blasting away the top of a mountain, scraping the coal seam off in one layer and dumping the excess material in a nearby valley. At this rate, West Virginia will end up as flat as Kansas.
-
@roadkilled I've spent some time in Appalachia. It's sad seeing all those knocked down mountains.
-
@mastermario I'm getting mixed messages.
-
@nickhasanexocet it's more a comment on Fox news reporting than anything else. Like how all the supply chain issues and gas prices are obviously Biden's fault. Since that's the case then it must be Biden's doing that coal is up 20% too
-
@mastermario First time here? It was the last guy's fault that a global pandemic started in a foreign country.
Water is wet and all that.
-
@mastermario You forgot - Ds only create economic chaos and depression, Rs create golden times for all, a real golden shower of wealth if you will.
-
@fintail They're really putting the "trickle down" in that economics philosophy...
-
@nickhasanexocet I don't recall anyone blaming Trump for the pandemic just for his response, which was to try to brush it under the rug.
-
@roadkilled Peabody is still strip mining Black Mesa in Arizona. They were also strip mining the Kayenta mine up until 2019. They’ve fucked up quite a bit up there.
-
It's always interesting to me how many Americans think of coal as a huge employer. However, mountain top removal and other techniques have allowed the industry to drastically reduce the workforce. A 2019 report from the U.S. government put total employment in the industry at 54,000. This makes it one of the smallest industries in the country.
I'm a bit cynical and it seems to me that trickle-down economics hasn't helped in West Virginia. The large amount of money brought in by the coal companies does not seem to help reduce poverty across that part of Appalachia. Coal employs less than 1.5% of the population of the state and the state's median household income is the lowest in the country.
-
@roadkilled It’s because they generally extract coal in rural areas, where it ends up being a major employer for the local economy. Both mines I mentioned are on the Hopi and Navajo reservations, where jobs are very scarce. Miners in the area were willing to go into uranium mines unprotected before they all closed to give you an idea of situation there.
But yes, you could replace those jobs with less intensive and destructive energy production and still retain jobs, which is why the Navajo built a solar plant in Kayenta. Peabody Coal is also one of the worst companies out there, and royally fucked over the Hopi on mineral rights at Black Mesa.
Copper mining brings in a lot more jobs here, but Freeport McMoran is only the 17th largest employer in the state despite being headquartered here and one of the largest copper producers in the world. They employ about as many people as Bashas grocery stores, who I thought had gone out of business.

Was really interesting to learn about this. Given all the focus on Manchin lately there have been a bunch of NYT articles talking about his involvement with the industry, and the supposed conundrum of WV - where they are horribly impacted by flooding due to climate change, yet the senator keeps talking about protecting local jobs, while reality is that it is a dwindling part of the economy and very little of the money actually helps the locals.

We’ve even had more liberally minded oppos actually refer to nations as shitholes, so maybe we are making some progress! Unfortunately I think it’s because most people are full of shit.
-
@zhp-sparky-the-5th Blasting up mountain tops, deforesting hillsides and scraping them clean for coal extraction probably has a greater impact on local flooding than climate change. However, they’re both going to play a role.
-
@dipodomysdeserti I'd assume those using that term were mocking a disgraceful legitimately voted out POTUS who used the term in public to describe other areas.
-
@fintail In this case it was used in context, to explain why people come to the US. The term was used unironically. Not really surprising considering how both parties treat immigrants.
-
@dipodomysdeserti it was a boorish idiotic statement from a man who meets those terms. Most amusing as large swaths of magaland would be considered shitholes by many in several other nations.
In this system, immigrants are labor to be used and exploited when possible. Both sides are in on it.
-
@fintail Yes, but that’s not what the conversation was about. It was about immigrants leaving their homes to try and support themselves and their families.
We have some less stellar areas in this country that are both blue and red. The Maga king came out of one of the blue ones.
-
@dipodomysdeserti It's important to remember that the Orange Shit Gibbon was a Democrat up until he realized that he'd get further as a Republican and the Bush clan are straight up New Englanders. Hell come to think of it, Republican presidents for the last 40 years have all come from pretty heavily blue states. Must be something in the water...
-
@dipodomysdeserti And it was a moronic word choice unbecoming of his ex-office, and a line that will be mocked for some time. I mean, just more real talk from a legit alpha male, a brave warrior for truth justice and freedom who was just telling it like it is.
I'd rather live in the leafy wealthy environs where 45 got his silver spoon than methlandia or hills have eyes territory.

Not me, but I also know from experience that this is a false dichotomy.
