Alright, Carvana. This isn't funny.

So! The inspiration for this post is that my neighbor -- who just traded his RS3 for GLB35 AMG -- also bought an '06 Ranger Supercab two days ago. It is super clean. Appears to be the Vulcan V6 and RWD.
So I hopped online and started shopping Rangers. Same old story on all used pickup: massive spectrum but ultimately inflated prices across the board. Yeah, some used lots asking over $20k(!) for their 4.0 4x4 supercabs that make your eyes roll...
But the true villain of the day is Carvana:
Yes, this is a 10-year old Ranger with virtually no miles. But it is still a 10-year old b-b-b-b-b-BASE Ranger! The MSRP on this thing was $18,600 in 2011. And today they want $19,990. Adjusted for inflation, they're saying this this is worth 87% of it's original value (internet says $18,600 a decade ago is $22,682 today).
Features: ... uh... KEYS!!!!Is it clean? Yes.
It is the most reliable powertrain? Just about, and certainly the cheapest to own.
Is that blue nice? Indeed it is.
Is this cheaper than any other low-mileage pickup on this planet? Ssssaaaadly. But is this a $20,000 pickup? I still say NO, even with today's increasingly-worthless money.
Please tell me I'm not crazy. Or tell me I'm crazy and need to "get with the times."
Thank you.

@dr-zoidberg you're not crazy, this is crazy.
This also makes me feel better for buying a $1,200 33 year old ranger that needs a lot of love instead of paying inflated prices for new.
-
@dr-zoidberg No you're not crazy. This is crazy, and anybody who pays that for this, is also crazy.
-
-
@atfsgeoff The public are often wrong! Perhaps even consistently!
-
@dr-zoidberg there is. 2004 with an extra cab for sale in my hood for $3500. Not quite that clean...
-
Carvana has been on some bullshit for awhile now. Their cars are overpriced just like Carmax. Look at this.
This is a 2019 Kia Rio S they have. It has just under 46,000 miles on it and they're asking $16,590. You know what the MSRP was on a '19 Rio? $16,100. They're trying to tell us that a Kia Rio has lost none of its value.
-
@lj909 Seems to be that way across the board for most models -- but even a Rio?! Seriously feel bad for anyone forced to buy a car right now.
-
@dr-zoidberg Yea sadly everywhere is like this. And its frustrating for people that are in the market right now like me. Inventory is limited and haggling has gone out the window in favor of markups because there's more shoppers than there is inventory. I had one Hyundai dealer tell me almost flat out that they weren't taking markups off Tucson Hybrids because of the fact that they hardly had no inventory. Its crazy out there.
-
@dr-zoidberg Keys! To what you may ask? We have no idea! But Jinglejinglejinglejignle buy our outrageously expensive 2wd 10 year old truck
-
@lj909 Yes, weren't shopping Rio's but late model used with low miles. What they wanted for 2-4 year old cars with 10,000-30,000 miles on them was about the same as a new car if you could find a dealer that wasn't marking up new cars. I don't usually think new is the best deal, but it kind of is now. For not much more than the featured Ranger order a new Ford Maverick.
-
@dr-zoidberg Saw the pics, etc., the want is strong, saw the price.....woah Nellie, not anywhere near that strong
-
@dr-zoidberg Features: ummm, keys? Someone had some fun with that one. They aren't even good keys as that's one of the vehicles that Ford only made a couple variations of so any old Ranger key might fire it up.
-
@lj909 Well. . . 2019 dollars were worth a lot more than 2021 dollars so it might have lost a fraction of its value, but still.
-
@dr-zoidberg JFTDC, that is all I have to say.
-
@dr-zoidberg Eh, it's supply and demand. I recently sold my seven year-old Defender, sight unseen, for about 40% more than I paid for it.

No-one here in their right might would even ask that much for a 10 year old Ford Ranger 4x2 extra cab...
-
@silentbutnotreallydeadly True, but they're ten a penny. I wonder what one in minty condition with 27,000km would go for?
-
@dr-zoidberg Every time I think used car prices can’t get any more insane, they do. Ridiculous.
-
Blame the lack of new car production
-
@dr-zoidberg Just buy a base Maverick unless you desperately need the bed length.
-
@dr-zoidberg Good looking truck. At least double what it is worth though.

Or a twenty year old Tundra which I know from experience will run better than any Ranger.

Well, AU$12,000 would get you a decent car with over 150,000 km. So I'd guess that around AU$15,000 and some patience might get a win.

Just saw a 93 S10 going for over 12k at a local lot. This market is like Tulips in Denmark...
