Reddit’s Just Rolled into the Shop is a veritable cornucopia of the many wonders and oddities of shop lyfe. You never know what’s gonna roll in. Here’s what caught my eye this week.

Pretty gravy job really after youve done one or two. Just time consuming

...Oil pan went boom. I have found bits of cinderblock EVERYWHERE. lol
...They shut it down immediately. However after it was towed to the body shop the technician started it up and pulled it inside. I said there is no way to say if there is internal damage or if the pickup sucked up bits of cinder block and sent them through the oil passages sooo I recommended a used or new engine. You can guess which the insurance company decided upon.“C/S ‘hit a cinder block on the highway’ check and advise” she’s dead jim.

Lets just say we needed to put oil in it to move the car first. That's what we where able to get from the bottom.
A trade we took in. Lady said engine was loud. That's all the oil we found.

Tensioner failure, it actually was still mounted. This is just how it was, when i pulled the timingcover off.
c/s slight rattle from the engine. i'm surprised it didn't grenade itself. 2014 Renault Clio 0.9l 3 cilinder

Rear hvac temp control door
...this is a 2016 [Envision], no warranty. Book time is 12.5 plus 1.5 for evac and recharge a/c. The video was taken at the end of the day, I was only 3.5 hrs into it at that point.
Doors have to come off to access bolts holding inthe dash tie bar. It's bolted from the outside in by like 8 inch long bolts that are in the door jamAnother feat of engineering, a la GM

You can see it in the picture, right side of dash. That little part where it’s coming up a bit is it
2020 escape has very slight dash gap, now Ford is paying a 4th the cost of the car for us to reskin it

GM 3.6... timing cover was leaking and customer wanted it fixed, and then I saw the chains lol
It was in an 07 acadia, no lights or codes, not even a rattle at startupJust in time....

We carefully relocated him to a wooded area.He was sleepy, poor guy.

...they were only 1 inch (maybe 1 1/4 in.) sheetrock screws.
But there's only a half inch (at most) between the carpet and the tank.Notice the position of the gasoline puddle underneath in correlation to the Amp.
This tank is screwed. (continuation from my post yesterday)

Customer states they felt a weird vibration so they slowed down and started to get off the highway when this happened

It was caused by the broken exhaust up front going every which way, which caused the rear piece of exhaust hanger to come off which caused the exhaust to go on the gas line and rub against it causing a hole. It's really just a domino effect
Customer states "I smell gas and i think somethings leaking"... yep, no wonder you smell gas

This is a 3 cylinder Perkins engine...
Broken ring lands on all of the pistons. No compression, no start.DON'T use ether on a diesel engine...

The advisor said “ I just checked that location of your vehicle, it is in the shop being serviced. I will update you when the car is done”
Customer is emailing/calling to find out why their windows & doors are open…. While the car is in service at a Mercedes Dealer.

It’s a work truck at a refinery. Once it’s cranked in the morning, doesn’t get shut off until their shift ends.
I’m seeing 16k miles over the last oil change but this truck idles about 7 hours everyday..Came in for AC issues. Some people just have different priorities..

Obligatory tire post
Found inside one of the rear duals of one of our fleets trucks, that's about 60 pounds of mud turned into rocks, they wore out the valve from the inside.

Obligatory brake post
Did anyone order extra crispy rotors?

@urambo-tauro I feel like you missed something I found funny, but can't remember what it was. Maybe the doggo with the "dog toy" (NSFW)
-
@urambo-tauro Great work as always. The tires full of mud really confuse me though. Where did all that's tuff enter?
-
@whoistheleader I assume they got into some muddy pickle on a jobsite resulting in a debeaded tire. Someone then probably re-seated it in the field. Kinda hard to drain a mounted partially debeaded tire without complete removal and breakdown. Since its a fleet rig, they just rocked it until it became a problem.
-
-
@thebarber Good guess!
Bead got seperated somehow, being a dually, it had the other tire to support it, so they kept driving on it, and gathering more and more mud.

Haha I remember that one! Yeah it's always a bit of a gamble putting these together as I go along. I try hard to keep it down to about 25 entries, tops. A typical week starts out with a lot of strong candidates, and I usually find myself leaving good ones out of the draft to make room for the great. It's hard to gauge what level of outrageousness the week will bring. I usually end up with about 30-40 "finalists" to whittle down even further, but this was a relatively mild week IMO, and it turned out that I didn't have to cut anything to keep it down to a manageable number.
At any rate, I'm glad that you're following the sub and not just my roundups! You're always welcome to add your favorites too!

@urambo-tauro Wow, did they ever dodge a bullet on that Acadia!
-
@facw "Hey is this ____ veterinary clinic? yeah I need to have my dog tested for an std...make that all of them"
-
@urambo-tauro That Envision... I've pulled the dash out of my Volvo 240 and it was a miserable job. I can't imagine what that must be like. Who said just the other day that GM seems to design things to be worked on by humans?
-
@urambo-tauro that GM Engineering one, sadly Opel does the same stupid thing. had to remove doors to replace a Clutch master cylinder, as you need to remove the dash to do the job, as for the GM HFV6. yup typical GM design fuckup.
-
@pip-bip That's bizarre. Do they even contemplate the need to service things and replace parts?
-
@streetsofperth i don't think they do
