PNW Oppo Meet 2022: Official Launch

Now that we're here on the good ship Hyphen, I felt like I needed to put in a bit more effort, this isn't kinja anymore....we're professional!. This all may seem early, but it'll come sooner than you think. Prior (successful) events have shown there's no such thing as too much planning.I'm pleased to share the event site: https://www.pnwoppomeet.ca/. While I'm willing to shell out 99 cents for the domain and latte money for the site, I'm not paying to get rid of the Wix ad, so live with it. This site is more shareable and looks better if you want to flip it to friends/family who you don't want on the Hyphen (for whatever reason). The sooner people can RSVP, the better. RSVP here, even if you are not sure you'll make it.
We'll use Discord (https://discord.gg/QHWZhfr) to communicate again. I'd like to explore FRS radios as a vehicle to vehicle option though. I'll be adding a communication page to the site in coming weeks.
The broad overview:
I'm heading down Friday the 14th. I've got a Yurt (rigid tent) booked in Fort Stevens Park. It's $64USD and they have electric heat... I'd recommend it to anyone travelling in as cheap accommodations that evening. There's a cool Civil War/WWII gun battery nearby that saw action against a Japanese sub. It's worth checking out.
Day 1 - Astoria & The Oregon Coast
After meeting at the historic Astoria Column, we'll make our way to Cannon Beach for a tailgate lunch beside the wreck of the Peter Iredale in Fort Stevens State Park. Vehicles are allowed on the beach, but 4x4 or AWD is recommended (but I did it in a '96 Intrepid).
From there, we'll drive along the some of the best roads in Oregon back towards Portland. Specifically Highway 202 from Astoria to Mist, then Highway 47 from Mist to Buxton via Veronia. From Buxton we'll take US 47 back into Portland.
We'll meet up once more in the evening for dinner & drinks in the Buckman Neighborhood, which is central and easily accessible via transit.
Day 2 - A
Our first weather dependant plan. If it's a sunny winter day, we'll head up to Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood. The 1930's built lodge was made famous as the "Overlook Hotel" in Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining". This is an alpine drive, snow rated tires are mandatory, carpooling will be available if desired.
This will be a cool albeit snowy drive. This is the Google maps streetview from March
I'll work with local Oppos to come up with a secondary plan should Mt. Hood not work out. Karting, Columbia Gorge ice falls or a museum are all on the table.

@carsoffortlangley Dammit my dyslexia was excited for official lunch.
-
@carsoffortlangley I’m unable to take part with the whole being on the opposite end of the coast, but had a personal tidbit to add.
One of my grandfathers was stationed at that shore battery and was there when the sub shelled it. He had quite a few interesting stories from his time there including the fact that depending on his job on a day to day basis it changed whether he was considered to be in the Army, Navy, or Coast Guard.
If anyone makes it to the site I’d love to see pictures. -
@carsoffortlangley this looks like fun and I'd be interesting in joining, but I dont have snow/winter rated tires so im unsure how good of an idea it actually be for me to go.
-
@zenith2455 Worse comes to worse, drive out far enough that you can score a Turo rental or ride shotgun with someone.
-
Consider me RSVP'd. There's a fish 'n chips place in Astoria and a cider house in Portland I need to visit
-
@carsoffortlangley Hmm, gotta figure out if I want to stay down there on Sat or drive back and forth. It's only a 2hr drive for me to Goonie town. Not sure how "equipped" my Pilot will be by then either. Tough choice between the Pilot or TSX.
-
Not sure I'll be up for a drive to the coast in January, but if nothing else, I can catch up with you all in town for dinner.
It's too bad the World of Speed museum cloed down, that would have made a good plan B if the Mt Hood drive gets snowed out.
-
@mark-tucker That's understandable on the coast drive. Yeah, I was bummed to hear about the World of Speed, that would have been ideal.
-
@carsoffortlangley I'll almost certainly join for the snowy part, and in town stuff, if not the coast stuff. I fear I may get myself in trouble trying to drive those roads at Ducati pace because that's the only vehicle I've taken out that way in years
-
@kiltedpadre well hell, I'll head out there and snap a couple photos for you oppo meet or not.
@CarsOfFortLangley I'm in! This is going to be an awesome weekend. Wet, but awesome
-
@mark-tucker @CarsOfFortLangley evergreen air museum is super cool though. Admittedly I haven't been there since I was like 12, but to 12 year old me it was tits.
-
@beefchips Yeah that's a strong contender. It'd be neat to see the Spruce Goose.

Mid January is like our prime time for one of the few snow dumps, and when it snows around Vancouver just moving through and escaping is the actual hell.
Even when you have winter or snow rated tires, 2/3 of the other cars around here don't so like 3 cars have enough acceleration make it through the typical traffic light and everyone is driving 1/2 the speed limit because they have no grip.

I'm considering flying down and renting a rig because no way I'd burden CoFL shuttling my goofy ass for days on end, especially on his Birthday. I also expect the highly likely chance I'll be stuck working though.
-
@exage03040 yeah, snow would complicate things, but I think we'll still have fun
-
@carsoffortlangley @Exage03040 if worse comes to absolute worst we can always hang out at Ground Kontrol (arcade/bar) and then hit up Voicebox for karaoke
-
@carsoffortlangley there are a couple karting options. K1 speed, which is newish and I think caters more to "normal" people, i.e. not car enthusiasts. Sykart has been around forever and lots of people who who do real HPDE's go there for practice in the off-season; 5hp and 8hp kart options.
Also!!! There's a place north of Hood River called backwoods brewing and it is amazing. Amazing pizza. Amazing beer. Amazing-ness. May be too far out of the way or not work out time wise, but it exists and is worth a stop.
Ape caves could be a viable option if Timberline is too snowy. Maybe. Really depends on weather severity and location affecting the roads.
Other touristy weather-alternative options: Vista house. Multnomah falls. There's loads of stuff in the gorge. That time of year, even snowy frozen waterfall hikes are possible.
Attaching @decay-still-has-too-many-beaters so he doesn't miss this. I'm also going to see if I can get a hold of @futureheapowner since I don't think he made the transition to the hyphen.

Like I wouldn't mind coming down for the two days, one night DT. Early flight Sat morning meeting at Cannon Beach and leaving the Sun evening or something. Interestingly a half-ton pickup is the cheapest at PDX with National and I'd totally wheel it.
If I have days off, I'd offer Zenith or Snuze (or anyone considering flying into PDX) wants to meet at the airport and ride out from there as a crew.

@carsoffortlangley @AMGtech Does Oregon salt their roads? As a guy with four Toyotas, this is an appropriate question.

Some roads, sometimes. They put gravel down all over, and commonly spray magnesium chloride. Salt happens, strategically, but I wouldn't call it common.

I'll have to decline. I'm annoying enough online and you don't need to deal with me in person. Besides, I've only got a Mazda 6 with all-season tires, so it's not good on either the beach or the mountain.
