Any of you keep a "Next" list/folder somewhere?
In high school, I dreamed of having a 300ZX TT. Jump to college and my first few years out - had an '88 Legend, always thinking about what my next car could be. Had my '05 Mazda 3s hatch for 7 years, and always thought about what would be next. Had my E90 M3 for 8 years, and repeat, though I did consider keeping it for the long haul. I've just gotten the SS, but I'm always imagining what might be down the road in my automotive life--I can't help myself... A sickness? An addiction? I like to think I'm still that kid with posters on his wall of beautiful, powerful, thrilling machines.
What's on your "next" list? Or maybe your next, next list? Clearly mine angles much more toward want, not need, and is more of a future wish list than actually a list of what might be next. But sometimes, dreams do come true.
(Raw includes Elise, Exocet, Ariel, Caterham, etc.)

I keep this list mostly to remind myself to search for these bikes, but it's kind of a wish list-

Keeps changing. Was a Camaro Berlinetta when in middle school, amongst other things.
Now, I've got an ND Miata, a Caddy CT-something, Stinger GT, bunch of other stuff.
But then the K900 I have wasn't even on my radar until the day I drove and bought it.
Life is so unpredictable, eh?

@davesaddiction not an official list, because I'm all over the place on wants and needs both. When I had an official list there were like 25-30 cars on it. But the one in my head currently includes:
- recent Boxster S
- 997 or newer 911
- E63 wagon
- 65 Olds 442
- 65 GTO
- 61 Impala
- 63 Bonneville
- ND or NA Miata
- TR6 or big Healey
Probably more but this took me like 30 seconds so these are the more ingrained wants.

I don't have anything documented, it's all in my head. Even then, my brain pretty much just hears "next!" and that's all it needs to hear. Or someone will post something interesting here that I'll have forgotten about and think, ooh, I should get one of those. Then give me a day, and I'll forget about it again.
I usually narrow my list to 3 or 4 disparate vehicles, research the snot out of them, then end up getting something completely different. My current next DD list is Bronco, and a variety of wagons/hatchbacks. That most likely means I'll end up in a Gladiator or Challenger or Earthroamer or Accord.
@williamssw This is a very good list.

I don't have a lot of money, so my 'next' list really just contains two things atm that I know will be attainable....i.e. a FIAT 126p and a Piaggio Ape TM.

I go down rabbit holes of making exhaustive lists of mods for cars I might buy or not. The most exhaustive of such lists are for cars I do own but I have several others for stuff I have no intention of actually buying, or might get as a fun car years from now. The Evernote for what I want to do to my Civic Si is so long that I tried to take a scrolling screenshot of it and the screenshot scroll ran out of room before the end of the list.

@davesaddiction Yeah, I'm silly. If the Tacoma pattern holds, I've got over an ENTIRE YEAR AND A HALF left in the 4Runner. Tacoma was second longest in terms of DD at 44 months.
The project cars have kind of become like the paper clip project. I try and keep trading up, The $900 Miata got fixed up and was sold for $3200. I didn't make any money on it, but didn't lose any. (It was worth more, though) I took $3000 of that and bought the Cougar. Through barter/etc it got fixed up a little, got out of that one for $7200 and actually made a little bit on it. Enter the Mustang for $5600. I'll be curious what it ends up getting replaced with. Lifespan for a project vehicle is about 3 years for me. 2.5 to go...
2022 should be an interesting year...

I keep the list in my head. It gets hard to keep track of sometimes

@davesaddiction It's always a V8 Mustang.

Caterham 7 360R SV in firecracker orange. Thanks to my current job, Im not putting any mileage on my DD. Before I move out, , I want to essentially get a large enough downpayment to "swap" my loans (payoff the ST and get a similar loan for the 360). At that point I will have crushed 80k of stundent debt so I dont feel too bad about what is a... substantial financial stretch. Move out of my parents house shortly thereafter. And hey, 300$ a month for a dreamcar aint too bad.
Even know it is maybe 3 years off, I already contacted the dealer in new york, "to build a rapport" lol yeah right.

Well, I think it would go like this in no particular order.
- Clubman S or Cooper S
- Miata NB, preferably stocki-ish like this one for sale near me.
Chevrolet Corvair, any year or body style, though those second gen coupes, mmmmm.
A particular 2002 Tundra TRD in green.
Citroen 2CV, Dyane, or other car that shares its running gear/suspension/etc
Citroen DS/SM or other hydropnuematic Citroen
Hyundai Veloster N

@davesaddiction I'm keeping an eye out for a Jeep that ticks all my boxes, and have started a new folder for it. Once I find what I'm looking for, I'll rename the folder with the actual year and whatever, but I've started slowly gathering things that I expect to be useful in the future: tech articles, links, PDFs, etc. Also, each time I go to look at a candidate, I save the ad and its pics to that folder just in case I do make the purchase and they take the ad down before I get home.

@davesaddiction thanks! And to be clear, by "GTV" I mean 105/115, which is a whole bunch of different names.

Folder consists of a combination of saved searches on Autotrader and For Sale forum links. CTS Vs, various Corvettes, S/RS/R Audis, fast wagons, rebranded Commodores, etc etc

I think the practical "wish I could, maybe one or two will happen eventually" shortlist is pretty short:
V60 polestar hybrid
WRX hatch/LGT wagon
Some sort of camper van/trailer (used Rivian towing an Airstream is the dream here)
Probably not but I can dream:
Aircooled 911 if they ever go back to sane prices
Bicycles, though, much longer list...

The list is currently on hold, but yes I have one!
Yellow Miata... I will have. Someday. V8 swap while looking as pristine and stock as possible.
I was going back and forth between an OG NSX and an M2 during my last management stint two year ago. This was when prices were comparable. It would have been a terrible financial decision, and I'm very glad I lost my job before I did a dumb. And honestly I'm still not sure which I'd rather have...
Cheap craigslist scooter was crossed off the list last winter! $1200, in all it's flaming glory.
Grom... Meh. Maybe someday. No longer quite as appealing.
V70R second gen I've considered buying this year for winter duties. Unfortunately they seem to have become as rare as hens teeth.
I want a Monster. Bad. Especially after seeing how boring the newest generation looks. If ever I was to make a bad financial decision it would be buying a brand new 2020 monster 1200

I want a Ducati Streetfighter, but I’ll probably make it my next work license present to myself whenever I manage to get everything squared away.
I want to fix the car rather than swap it for anything. Nothing like the vvtl-i bump these days.

Something mid-engine. But I don't know what yet.

@davesaddiction I dream of owning so many things, a list would be pointless. Besides which, I haven't ever quite been financially stable enough to buy any "want" cars. I could be irresponsible and swing it now, possibly even justify it to myself, but I will be needing everything to start sending kids to college in a couple years.

@thejwt You want a CB-1? I'll make you a deal...
Snuze last edited by
@thejwt I don't have anything on paper. But I have a couple lists in my head. One is the "immediate successor" which is to say, if my current car got totaled or something, what would I want to replace it with. The other is the "lottery" list of cars I'd want to buy if I hit it big. Although I don't play much so that's probably not going to happen, but still.
