GIF and Image Upload Process Change
-
@Jb-boin figured this out in our dev environment late last week but I didn't have a chance to make the same change in Prod until tonight.
The uploading of gifs should now work like images do, as well as some changes to the backend on images which should make them a bit more smooth. Basically copy and paste a gif into a reply or topic and it should just work (it also works as an upload in the thumbnail).
Note: Leaving this post pinned for a day(ish) to let this info circulate amongst everyone since it is a change in operations.
-
Thank y'all again for all the work you're putting into our new home!
-
@flatisflat Thanks for being a part of it! All you amazing folks is why we're doing it. If this place went away we'd have to talk to relatives or coworkers, can you imagine the horror?
-
Looks like it worked, but I had to go to the formal editor and hit the image upload button. It did not detect the gif from the link.
-
It looks like it doesn't like the copy from elsewhere as it gets served as a PNG that way, but if you save the gif to your PC and copy it here it'll work.
-
@jminer yes, but the gif posted as a png for some reason. Had to go through the post editor and click upload image.
-
@bwp240 Gotcha - yeah just pasting in the URL doesn't work, you'll need to paste in the gif itself.
-
@jminer I tried pasting both the gif and the url (both the link address and the image address). Neither worked in quick reply nor the editor. I had to download and reupload the image which is kind of annoying but worth it for maximum shitposting.
The animations work in the preview window which is a nice touch.
-
@bwp240 Yeah the native uploading of gif files is what a lot of folks wanted. The embed link worked before, but you weren't able to upload one.

Thank you. You guys have done a great job to get our Hyphen running smoothly. Any way to add the "Loop" checkbox to the R-click menu? Or something like it. Don't mind watching the movement a few times but the ability to stop them would really help this old, autistic brain.
-
@barnie what loop are you talking about?

On many sites that I visit, there are moving pics. I can usually R-click on them and a menu item labeled "Loop" is checked. I uncheck and when the gif(?) ends, it stops. From Daily Mail:
-
@barnie it's because those are not gifs but videos in webp or mp4 and even in this case, it's the browser that has the loop option, not the website.
-
@jb-boin Dang. Ok, it was worth a try. Ta.
-
@jminer awesome news! I'll update the User Guide tonight!
-
@jminer Woo! I'll try not to kill it with dashcam gifs.

Long term, how will this affect our server space usage if we upload gifs instead of link them?
-
@chariotoflove I was wondering about that too. Kinja's solution was to automatically convert uploaded GIFs into MP4. Not sure how complicated something like that would be to implement here, but MP4s do take up a LOT less space.
-
@jminer Thanks again!
-
-
@jminer Nice! I'm glad it wasn't a suppository! What are your thoughts on supporting HTML5 video (webm and mp4 files), slowly replacing gifs around the web?
-
@jminer Gotta make the shitposters happy, or Oppos will mutiny! LOL
I have no idea what kind of metrics you have access to, but I'd love to see how much our image storage space/cost goes up with the addition of GIFs in the next months.
