we finally got our first egg after a 6.5 month wait. (6 months is average for this breed i guess) We took it inside, scrambled it up, and the whole family got a bite or 2 of the first egg.
I went out later and saw this guy:

therfor the egg was first, and the car was second in my day.

Now which came first? The wrap or the chicken?

Very nice! Raising chickens for eggs is a lot of work, very well done.

I grew up on a small farm, and disliked the work enough I only started growing vegetables again a couple years ago. Not sure I can do chickens, the Mrs and I have talked about it but she hasn't been able to convince me.

I like fresh eggs much better than from the store - yolk seems to be creamier, shells are tougher, usually a bit bigger overall, plus they keep way longer.

Craigslist will push me, and I'll say no; read my lips: no new projects.

@jminer My cousin keeps chickens; apparently one big bonus is they do a good job of keeping ticks under control.

                      On walkabout. Back soonish.

@Just-Jeepin I'm lazy and spread bug killer on the lawn twice a year, both helps keep the ticks and grubs at bay which also helps keep away the Moles.

Chickens are awesome for gardens too - they both eat pests and fertilize. My wife almost had me convinced to get a couple, but then we decided to move.

@opposaurus-wrx what breed do you have, my guess based on that egg and what you said: Brahmas? they lay in the winter pretty well, even without artificial light. Our pullets just started laying, we have 3 each Brahmas and Ameraucanas. We're getting about 1.5 a day right now, with mostly brown and a couple blues in there. We have artificial light in the coop, or we wouldn't be expecting any from the Ameraucanas 'till spring.

I like big boost and I cannot lie.

ah, last time I had orpingtons the pullets didn't lay 'till spring... though they are good volume layers.
