I just permanently traded away a perfectly good employee to another contractor in exchange for the use of one of their trucks from now until the end of January. And I feel like I came out with the better deal.

      Shit is cray.

Winter-mode sketchmobile for your time. I've decided I'm not buying another vehicle for winter. I'm just going to use the power of positive thinking to keep it from snowing.

Wow - a full time employee for the use of a truck for 60 days? That's nuts!

There are options if it does snow. Washington allows studded snow tires for cars, so why not for motorcycles?

It really is. But the growth these past 11 months has been absolutely unreal. We've been at Christmas or higher levels of volume from March to October—which is unprecedented—and now we're currently seeing delivery volume at 3x what it was last year during peak season. No end in sight.

@roadkilled I should really look into snow tires. That's probably a thing for bikes, right?

@aestheticsinmotion wow - well good luck. I know I've ordered a ton more than in years past. It's folks like you and your team working off your asses to make it happen and thank you!

I felt kind of bad/dumb ordering a weight bench for delivery ... but I really don't want to go to a store for anything but food these days.

My work bought 3 50ft straight trucks just for drywall this year. Most of them work in Toronto doing drywall contracts for huge jobs ($2 million+), so spending $300k-$400k on a truck makes sense. One for hotel reno job that's gonna be about 350tons-400tons of drywall going in. Along with 1 hospital reno, & 1 new hospital built.

Ha. Naaaa. Having good relationships with the various contractors is good for business. Not all of them understand that but hey...

I'm realizing that taking out a 500lb+ bike in the snow on old unknown tires with zero experience on breaking loose traction is probably... Unwise.

Mid '80s I was working for a company in Cola SC. After a visit to SFO, I told them I was moving out there and were they going to move me or was I going alone? They moved me out there to FFL a project. I was making 14k and medium out there was 35k. Mentioned this to my boss back in Cola. 3-days later a kindly gal came to my cubicle and and asked me to come to HR. I'd been traded like a ball player! Left there 13 months later at 65k but brain burnt.

@aestheticsinmotion How does that work? Are your drivers under enforceable contracts? I assumed the maniacs I see driving around are just at will employees or private contractors themselves.

@aestheticsinmotion my UPS was delivered by a guy driving a 5 year old black F150. That’s a new one for me. FedEx is driving 1/2 to chevys with canopies.

And you may ask yourself, "Where does that highway go to?"

Driver agreed to the switch. Not surprising, seeing as his pay stays the same and his hours will drop substantially.

Depends on company. There's a a big difference between how the four biggest competitors operate

I had to talk to my insurance company and found out they don’t need me to add commercial insurance to deliver pizzas for a friend who manages a local restaurant. Now I’m tempted to do that in the winter when my 4wd might come in handy.

Assuming I can keep a Jeep running.

I delivered pizza in high school. When it snowed, I'd borrow my dad's truck and have a ball driving in 4wd on unplowed roads. Tips were substantially better when the weather was nasty too!

That sounds like a blast. I always wanted to deliver pizzas in the Miata during the snow season

@aestheticsinmotion I guess the driver market must be pretty thin as well. Too many DUI’s for all the bartenders and servers out of work.

@dipodomysdeserti Since the second wave of closures that started 5 or 6 weeks ago, I've had an insane amount of interest in jobs. 5+ people a day showing up, and none of them flaking out halfway through the lengthy hiring process.

And yet, over the past 9 months of Covid-19 related job losses, I don't think I've had a single person apply from a restaurant job.

@aestheticsinmotion Pretty big roll of the dice for your ex employee then. Trusting that another company will keep him on with that many workers applying for jobs every day. We’ve had quite a few former bartenders applying for teaching jobs down here.
