...Hyphen and DT and Discord and...
I will say, it’s been much more enjoyable today than it was a couple days ago—feeling more like a birth announcement than a funeral—but I look forward to the day when we’ll all (mostly) back together in one place.
-
@davesaddiction
I see a lot of the regulars on Hyphen already.... Looks like other folks were doing a roll call...Couldn't navigate thru the DT ads... this is much nicer. once it needs funding to stay alive, I am sure there will be a bunch of us to pay to have our own slice of cyberspace to nerd out on cars, bikes, planes, and the like...
-
@davesaddiction It is going to be a hard habit to break - going to oppo on Kinja. It's the first shortcut in my chrome homepage...
We're up 56 members today and at 238 total. That's a pretty serious chunk of Oppos. I've even seen several rare or new commenters show up here.
Only time will tell if we're all going to stay, but solid engagement so far.
-
@davesaddiction I want to be optimistic, but I’m getting the bad feeling we’ll end up split. There will be some like us who check everything, and some who choose one and stick to it.
-
@davesaddiction I like how the tone has been a lot of celebration and sharing some of our favourite things versus a begrudging slow death. Fingers crossed it keeps up.
And think about it: if we did $10 a year to post, that's $2k right there to keep things running. I'd be more than happy to pledge more since I can afford and others might be less able to. -
This all a bit like a Doctor Who regeneration. You spend a few episodes getting use to it (including coping with the odd dud) and then suddenly you are hooked and away...or not. I've already made the call that I won't be playing at DT...
-
@cb That's a good point! I'll happily pay a small sum like that to have a non ad infested Oppo that is controlled by one of our own!
-
@jminer Seeing some long-missing OPPOs return who got fed up with Kinja has been really gratifying!

Couldn't navigate thru the DT ads... this is much nicer.This. I've spent very little time over at DT after first engaging with it and getting the ad-crowding. I thought, "oh, this feels familiar...in not a good way..."
-
@dawrx If we can get "critical mass" here (or somewhere), I have faith that all but a very small percentage will follow.
-
@flatisflat It's slow as hell with those ads too. I'm still trying to engage over there, but just not sold on being on that guy like I've been on Oppo.
-
@jminer TBH only thing lacking here imo is nested comments... otherwise it is perfect!
-
@italianjobr53 That is a very hard problem to solve. There is only one modular nesting comment solution I was able to find and that's disqus, which has problems of it's own.
We will not likely be here forever and may migrate to another platform at some point when one that fits better than this becomes an option. For now though it's the best I can do.
-
@italianjobr53 how did you get blue Oh.....okay, nevermind.
-
@jminer I see...thanks for creating such a good platform tho!
-
@peter_black I've decided that I'll be using this particular shade of blue to comment on Hyphen from now on
-
@jminer Discussions seem to be working quite well for now, but on threads that get truly huge, we'll probably just have to start using the quote function more to help keep it clear what a person's actually responding to.
And there were plenty of Kinja threads, especially on the FP, where I'd completely lose track of who was responding to whom... -

@davesaddiction My last post on Oppo was Saturday, and I think today will be the last day I'll be commenting or saving posts. Today was the first day it really sunk in that it's going to end, but FAR worse than it simply ending is the fact they're just going to delete everything. Like nothing ever happened. There are so many gems in the comments and great conversations that will just be forgotten. I will not support Kinja/GO moving forward.

Same. And I find myself going to other sites on the Web and reflexively looking to the top right corner for a notification.
-
@dr-zoidberg I'm very hopeful they figure out a way to migrate a full, searchable archive from the Atom/RSS feed.
-
@dr-zoidberg 100% with you. We're doing what we can, zero details on the feed we are supposed to get other than what Rory put in the article. Couple devs from Oppo and another Kinja sub blog are working on some backup options if nothing else works.
If we get something it won't be hosted on this forum directly, but probably on an 'archive.opposite-lock.com' place in a read only fashion. Due to sheer size too may only host something like the last 5 years too, it's 450,000 posts and nearly a million pictures not counting comments in it's entirety.
-
@jminer may the gods help us if we're cataloguing that many shitposts.
-
@jminer The long, informative/historical comment threads are going to be the real loss in all this, it sounds like.
-
@davesaddiction Definitely. Jb Boin put something together that grabs comments I think, but it'll be a hell of a challenge to put everything somewhere else. I have not had a chance to look at his in depth.
I'm with you on the comments too - so many things learned and experiences shared in the comments.
Almost certain we could host a text only version of everything, but with pics it probably gets too big.
