Calories per Dollar

Yesterday on my way home from a ski trip, I did something I don't normally do and stopped for some fast food. Doing the amount of exercise involved in skiing sure gives me a case of the munchies and with the long drive ahead, something portable and easy to eat fit the bill. So I pulled into McDonald's drive thru since it had no line and was the least out of the way. I intended on just getting some nuggets and fries and some unsweetened tea but doing the math, that would be like $14! Meanwhile this McDonald's had a deal for $16 I could get 40 nuggets and two large fries. Plus the tea and tax it was around $18. Now, I'm curious how much did I really consume. I didn't finish everything as I'm having 10 nuggets and most of the second fry for lunch today. But still, here is the math:
Conveniently McDonald's has a calculator. Damn look at all that salt! But considering how much I sweat out, I actually needed that. 2600 calories for $16 is pretty good though. Not that calories per dollar should be a metric to live by but it's fun to think that way sometimes. Anyways, it is bland McDonald's junk but I thought it was fascinating how cheap it was. I'm sure 3 costco rotisserie chickens is a better deal though. -
Sad truth: why some of the poorest people in the US are obese...
Glad you didn't eat it all in one shot! I also occasionally on road trips will enjoy some not pink slime McNugs (with sweet & sour sauce).
-
How did you not fall asleep immediately after eating?
Also, were there dipping sauces involved? You can really boost those carbohydrate numbers with some ketchup.
-
@just-a-scratch Two packets per nugget, please. FREE!
-
@just-a-scratch the giant xl tea was the keep me awake part lol. And all the salt was to combat needing to pee. I only ate 20 at first and nibbled another 10 over 3 hours or so. It definitely didn't feel healthy lol. And nah I didn't want sugar so no sauce for me. Too messy while driving anyways.
-
Nugs are good, though not as good as the best of road foods, the Crunchwrap Supreme
-
@davesaddiction yeah I could only imagine how bad of a choice this stuff would be if I just sat around all day and then ate this. Or feeding it to children all the time. Especially when paired with a large coke because "it's the same price, why would I get the smaller one?" I don't think any of the sauces at McDicks are anything other than corn syrup with coloring so I just eat them dry.
-
@forsweden Incorrect: beef jerky is conquerer of all road foods.
-
@wrong-wheel-drive You have to factor in the medical costs to treat your diabetes, heart disease and stomach cancer if you eat it regularly.
-
@wrong-wheel-drive I got you
-
@davesaddiction Which is why we're totally missing the mark addressing why covid is affecting minority populations to a much higher degree than others.
-
@dipodomysdeserti well of course, this is why fast food is not part of my normal diet. For example the day before my meals consisted of homemade scrambled eggs for breakfast, a homemade chicken sandwich with more vegetables than meat on it, and a big homemade meatless salad for dinner. That was a much better big calories but high nutrition sort of day. The amount of salt consumed here was the real problem which is something I avoid almost entirely in my own cooking.

Nugget here approves of all boxes filled with nuggets.

@wrong-wheel-drive When my cousin was in college, instead of eating ramen, he would go hungry for a day or two, then sit down and eat two or three Big Macs with fries and a coke. It was amazing to watch.
-
@bicyclebuck That's just disgusting
-
@davesaddiction McNuggets cure the 'rona?
-
I took my kid to McD's and got 2x20 nugget meals and we were both bloated and sick of nuggets after 10-15 each. Pretty amazing calorie density tho. I guess professional rock climbers type will eat straight up slated butter.
-
@forsweden No. McNugs make your body overcorrect for 'rona, possibly.
-
@wrong-wheel-drive if this is wrong I don’t want to be right.
-
@wrong-wheel-drive Macca's couldn't pay me enough to eat their food.
-
@highlander haha after I ate 20 and a whole large fry and they stopped being hot/fresh I started wondering what on earth am I doing and oh my I'm only halfway done! If hadn't skied all day I would have immediately regretted the decision. But even so, I feel like waiting the extra two hours until I got to in n out would have been far more rewarding. At least they use actual vegetables and fresh stuff.

Using the word food is generous. I've only ever considered it fuel from a place like this. But it's like operating like a multi-fuel deuce and a half. Sure it will burn ANYTHING but I imagine diesel will run better than used bacon grease.

@wrong-wheel-drive If you truly want calories per dollar, go with the McChicken. 400/cal @ $1/ea.
