I Did A Dumb (Phone Advice Wanted)

I inadvertently smashed my Samsung Galaxy S9+ this afternoon. You ever been really frustrated with something and shook your phone it like it was a screaming baby on a plane? Yeah, I did that, except I shook it right out of my hand and it went flying and now it's a parabola!
It's also somehow still functioning despite being slightly curved. I'm kind of impressed and I think that actually makes me want to buy another Galaxy. I've also been thinking about a Google Pixel 5, but apparently it's about equal to my 3.5 year old S9+. I do like the new S20 & S21 but man they are expensive.
-
@snuze "renewed" s10+ is $260 on Amazon. Its basically a lightly used phone.
Mine has been working well and had hardly any signs of use in it (2 scratches on the back glass) -
@snuze The carriers have huge trade-in offers right now for the iPhone 13… Verizon is giving me $1000 for my 2-year-old iPhone!
-
@just-jeepin Yeah, but then I'd have to get an iPhone... I think I'd rather send smoke signals. /s
But seriously, I've seen the trade in offers, they have them for the Samsungs as well. I'm just not sure how much my S9+ with a smashed screen that's having epileptic fits and bent chassis is worth. My guess is somewhat less than $1000.

Remember that they are not after the value of your used phone. They are after you. Go take a look at what they’ll do for you is what I say.

@italianjobr53 Biggest downside of buying a used phone right now is the OS upgrade situation. Samsung has said the S10 will get Android 12, but that will probably be the last update they get beyond security patches.

@snuze
I'm still running a 5 year old Motorola G Play on Android 7 that I paid AU$135 for......I'm not sure what anyone else would need.

It’s all about the cameras.

@snuze My wife upgraded from an S8 to the S21 earlier this year and she doesn’t actually like the S21, the under screen fingerprint sensor doesn’t work well and the phone is a little big for her.
If you want a cheap phone though buy a Motorola, quality is fine and they’re cheap and durable. You’ll get a cleaner android experience instead of the Samsung skin which will give you an idea if you’ll want a pixel after all.
I have the Pixel 4a and love it. Solid mix of performance and size. If I were to buy something today to replace it it’d be the 5a.

@jminer @SilentbutnotreallyDeadly I have a Moto G-Fast as my travel phone and I like it well enough, but there's still some things on my Galaxy that I prefer. Good to know about the S21 though. I suppose I'll head over to the store in the morning and check a few phones out and then see what fits my budget.
@Just-Jeepin That new iPhone camera does look pretty sweet!
-
@snuze If you're OK with something that's bulky, pricey, and kind of meh when it comes to the usual "smartphone" perks but which will brush off an incident like that as if it were nothing you might look at a Sonim XP8. I've been using an XP7 for years now and it's damn near indestructible. I've lost count of the number of times I've bounced it off concrete or asphalt and have managed to take it swimming in both fresh and salt water a few times. I usually go a week or more between charging as well.

Yeah maybe but since every photo I shoot for Oppo is done on this little phone...and nothing especially good is required for anything posted on the internet. In fact, it's often better not to go high quality since it just becomes expensive and virtually useless data.
And we already have quite decent digital cameras...
-
@snuze I've an S20+ and quite like it. I came over from an iPhone 6+. I tend to buy a flagship phone then absolutely run it into the ground so I get my money's worth.

The phone is irrelevant. I'm paying for a good camera that happens to have a phone attached.

Do you play games on your phone? And by "games" I mean mobile Fortnight, or other intense fast-twitch FPS games...? No? Then a Pixel 5/5a is plenty powerful, and despite the ”mid tier” CPU and GPU has all the modern radio features and the legendary Pixel camera, which although getting long in the teeth, was so incredibly good when it released that it stands up well today.
I really like OnePlus phones, almost bought an 8t instead of the Pixel 5a, but OS updates seem likely to get wierd with the merge with Oppo....
If all you care about is camera you want iPhone, Xiao Mi, or Asus ”insider” Phone...
-
@jawzx2 No high intensity gaming for me, just some sudoku to kill time on the bus and wake my brain up. As I mentioned, the Pixel 5/5a is basically identical in hardware to my S9+ (same chipset, same camera specs, etc.), and it's been perfect for my needs, which is why I am considering it.

I had a pixel 2 xl for a while and liked it quite a bit. But right around the 18 month mark it started having issues with the charging port. I had it replaced once and it worked another 3 months, then it failed again. Had it fixed at a certified repair shop too. I'd recommend getting something with wireless charging just to hedge your bets with USB C.
That being said, I went back to iphone. I have the "new" SE and it's been pretty great for me. I had the old SE and it was good too, until I tossed it in anger and it bounced off my couch, onto the hardwood and the screen popped out and shattered. I still had it fixed for about $100 including new battery. It's a good backup phone. Best thing about the SE is that you can get old model cases and accessories since they are based on older frames.
-
@snuze just got a 5a, I like it so far... It’s a little fatter (thicker) than the premium phones, but that's at least partly due to the huge battery. The 5g radio with all the bands is nice, I get service places I never did with my OnePlus 5t. The Google camera does what the Google camera does, which is not give you much control, but does such a good job you mostly don’t care.
-
@snuze Who is your provider? I have a year old OnePlus 7t sitting on my desk you can have for cheap.
-
@snuze S20 FE is a good phone and cheaper.

Honestly, I could do much better without both. Oppo would be collateral damage but I'd be fine with that.
-
Since you are not averse to Motorola. I am diggin' my Moto One 5G Ace....
-
@snuze I'm very happy with my new Pixel 5a. I don't see many reasons to get a 5 over the 5a, unless you can't live without wireless charging. The magic of Pixel phone cameras isn't the hardware (they're running a slightly refined version of the camera hardware in use since the Pixel 2), but rather Google's camera software. Their software does the good magic making old hardware do flagship-level pictures years down the road.
-
@silentbutnotreallydeadly It as simple case of expectations and desires. Your phone meets what you are after, and I really like having an iPhone 12 Pro Max with 256GB of storage for what I am after.
You are in a much better position.

BTW... doing that is a bad idea.
"You ever been really frustrated with something and shook your phone it like it was a screaming baby on a plane?"
Best to do that on an OLD device you don't care about.
" Yeah, I did that,"
Didn't I just tell you that you shouldn't do that?
"It's also somehow still functioning despite being slightly curved. "
If that's the case, you might consider looking into repairing it. That might be the cheapest and least disruptive option.
