Quite sometime ago, I used our tipper to destroy the rear gate on the tray. It used to hang down and it wasn't difficult to get it trapped on the tow hitch. Two hydraulic rams did the rest...
It has taken me sometime to do something about it. Today was the day....as I needed to go into town to get a couple of loads of mushroom compost for the vege garden.
The gate is a piece of old ply wood with some solid timber ends plus a few bits of old bracing angle fashioned to try and keep the gate in place on the open road. Add in a bit of rope and a strap and success!

@silentbutnotreallydeadly I'm pretty sure wood tailgates were a popular option on these. . .

Might I make a suggestion? Weld three stake pockets across the rear. Add some corner brackets to secure the top. Put some proper stakes on the new tailgate and you're good to go without the need for ropes or straps!
-
@bicyclebuck Oooo I like that corner bracket detail!

@bicyclebuck
The plan is to get a new tailgate folded up with a drop hinge to an existing side. It'll be locked in place by a lever cam unit I already have...Hillbilly engineering is for lazy amateurs!
