A FB car listing so unaware I had to post it
-
The important things to pick out here are:
real barn find
brand new clutch
service records up to 2018Right so, in order:
- Is not a barn find. This is a field car. It was left in a field. You've literally pictured it in a field with other
barn findsfield finds - It is not as found as it sure sounds like someone recently slammed a clutch into it. This is, of course, unless they're saying it got a clutch in 2018 but they're counting that one as brand new, which again negates point #1
- So not only is it not a barn find, but it hasn't been sitting very long. As field finds go, this is a good thing, but still...
Basically zero self-awareness in this post.
Any bets on if the seller actually has a title? I'm guessing... no. Also I love the mentality of "yes, 2 photos seems like plenty for a car I'm asking a premium for!" Shocked BaT didn't scoop this one up (/s)
Needless to say the 110 comments on it at the time of writing were... unkind.

@akioohtori Sorry, you wrote some words, but all I see is the spaceball
-
@akioohtori The only way this could be considered a "barn find" is if the guy bought the property and the car came with it. (And yeah, the whole "lack of a barn" thing still kind of ruins it.)
It looks like a fun project though, pretty well taken care of before it was parked. As long as mice haven't gotten to it, it should be fairly easy to recondition.
The biggest worry I have is: Why was it parked in the first place? Almost no one parks a running car for 3 years without a reason. Usually the reason is "I'll fix this problem later", and later never comes.
Either way, $4500 is CP for a non-R Volvo, even if it's a rare T5 with a manual.

This is fair

Volvo is not about facts. Volvo is about emotions.

This is an excellent question and my guess is the clutch, as that is the thing the seller (or whoever) appears to have replaced. I'm guessing that isn't a cheap job on one of these and, as noted, these cars aren't worth much even now. I've seen people junk cars for less for sure. Other concern would, of course, be rust.

that seat looks like a lot more than 90k
The last car I had with leather seats had almost 300k and looked better than that
-
@dogisbadob Ehh my Volvo's seat only has 50k on it and doesn't look much better, tbh. (I and took/take great care of mine) They make a big deal about using some form of natural leather but IRL what it seems to mean is it wears like crap.
-
@dogisbadob You clearly haven't had experience with
FordVolvo leather. That stuff likes to self destruct at the merest sight of the sun. Their black leather is bad but their tan leather is atrocious. I suspect 90k is accurate but it just was always outside. -
@akioohtori But if the clutch was replaced in 2018, then the problem is bigger than a clutch job.
The fact that the pictures were taken in the weeds where it looks like it sat for years does not give me confidence that it actually moves under it's own power right now.
-
@cobrajoe but the ad clearly states
no issues
! A rando on facebook asking premium money for a car they couldn't even be bothered to wash and detail to perpetuate proven fantasies about the cars condition and pedigree would never lie to us! -
@whoistheleader My black Volvo leather is totally fine aside from some really bizarre thing on the passenger seat (maybe a terrible quality repair?) I don't trust light leather from any manufacturer though.
-
Random data poins - I have a 27 year old Volvo with 220k miles and my seats look significantly better than pictured. Same for our 2010 with 170k.
-
@akioohtori "Barn find" is just code for fucked paperwork at this point
-
@akioohtori "90k on a brand new clutch"... so, you're saying you put a brand new clutch in it and then drove it another 90k?
Also, jesus that driver seat looks awful. Counting the 90k on the 'new clutch' I'm thinking this car must be over 200k.
-
@whoistheleader My 1991 940 looked terrible at 10 years/90,000 miles. Both front seat bottoms cracked, and the drivers seat back wore down to the foam on the side bolster. That car wasn't a paragon of interior durability in general, all the plastics sun faded to white and cracked in various places
-
@ranwhenparked Volvo had gotten a lot better by the time my sister's current 2008 XC70 rolled off the line but it's still got some durability issues. Is it really a Volvo if bits don't fall off?
