Hate to hear a place like this needs torn down

But I’ve been by this building, and i don’t doubt the statement that it’s beyond any reasonable effort to save it.
I’m sure there will be groups arguing about saving it, but I doubt any will come bearing checks and plans to make it happen. Thankfully one of the Wright Brother’s bike shops has been saved.

@kiltedpadre that sucks

Wrights were there for, at most, a couple years. It's an old multiuse building. Even brick and steel rot over time. There are plenty of other memorials to the Wright brothers.

@kiltedpadre It looks like it would be expensive to save. There was an addition on the back at a later date, and that addition is in very poor shape. That's left the whole structure open to the elements. It's possible that there is wood timbers in the original structure, and that would need significant repair. Aerial photos show that much of the roof is heavily damaged, so there could be a lot of water damage. Americans appreciate history, but only if somebody else pays for it.

@kiltedpadre Sounds more like the Gem City Ice Cream building to me.
-
I think this is the building in question. If they only made bikes here, and didn't do any work on their airplane, it's probably not that important of a building.
-
@kiltedpadre In the meantime, not far from where I'm from, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation just demolished the Newburg Inn, built in 1750, for a road widening project. It was built literally 10 years after the town of Nazareth itself was settled, it was there for 96% of the town's entire history.
They claimed it was in poor condition and too close to the road, but it was an active bar and restaurant until it was shut down in the early days of the COVID pandemic in 2020, foreclosed on, and then bought by the city at the sheriff's sale.
-
@kiltedpadre That is too bad, but sometimes things are just too far gone.
-
Looks kind of like the Newburg Inn of Theseus. Probably not much of the original building left.
-
@ttyymmnn A lot of big, old growth timbers. Some salvage company tried to buy them, but it would have slowed the demolition down too much.
-
That’s unfortunate.
-
@kiltedpadre Glad it's not being demolished because of some land buyer or warehouse, but a bummer indeed.
