DOTS: The Last Atlanta Edition For A While
-
I'm back home and not on campus anymore but I still have some DOTS to catch up on. Let's start with this exquisite early Volvo 240 sedan in a stunning shade of brown. I really like the early grilles on these and you don't see many like this around anymore.
Ah, the DL trim level, which stands for "dummy large." Are those Volvo mudflaps original?
Moving on, the teal 4x4 vent windowed XJ Cherokee we all want but so few of us can afford. It must be nice to drive a vehicle that exudes joy like that.
Lovely Land Cruiser. Hammerheadfistpunch would approve. But what's that behind it?
A Bentley Bentayga!
So much better than a Cullinan. It's a better looking car than I'd like to admit.
It's also rather large but not immense. It seems appropriately scaled at least and the proportions are decent. Bentley did a good job. And this one had the tan quilted leather interior.
And next we have. . . a something. Perhaps some sort of bomb squad vehicle? What do you think?
Finally, a Subaru Baja. Never quite understood the reason for these existing but they do. This one is a somewhat unpleasant two tone silvery green with silver plastic sides. Not a color scheme I'd want. This one wasn't actually in Atlanta but I thought it warranted inclusion.
-
You know, for a vehicle intended to display excessively exuberant opulence, the Bentayga looks rather modest. I still cannot disassociate it from the exceedingly pompous promotional photography that Bentley published at the release, though.
-
Would it really be Bentley if it weren't pompous? I agree though. Surprisingly understated and very well done but I doubt I'd like the owner.
-
@whoistheleader Hah, that photo might as well have a Daewoo Lanos. I was referring more to these:
You know, the ones that scream "be all the wanker that you can be".
-
@aremmes Wait, if that cabinet thing is a chiller for wine, why is that guy keeping his fishing lures in there? What a wanker.
But it's that halfhearted attempt at driveway glamping that gets me the most.
-
@whoistheleader That MRAP is owned by Atlanta Police S.W.A.T. but I can’t find much more info on it.
-
@classicdatsundebate @WhoIsTheLeader
Pretty sure it's a Bearcat G3 Variant. Not an MRAP (no V underbelly), but may have an anti-frag floor and most likely has high level ballistic protection (NIJ IV+?).
-
@looseonexit would you call it an APC?
-
I was at Georgia Tech almost ten years ago (when you could drive right through campus) and these photos were a trip.
The new Bentayga taillights are even fancier.

Haha I always thought these were pretty cool! It's kind of like a Ridgeline but with somewhat smaller and easier-to-park proportions.

It's a Bearcat but not one like any I've ever seen. What is all that stuff on the roof for?
-
@whoistheleader its an observation platform

You still can drive right through the periphery of campus through Techwood, Ferst, and loop back by the CRC. What roads used to be open?
I think the new taillight design is okay but I'm not sure it will be as well proportioned as they are on the Bentley coupes and sedans. When they're that big it looks like the eye of Sauron.
-
Bentayga is nice IRL right?!

Don't they have a midgate? I can't say the bed looks to be a particularly useful size but at least the overall car is a sensibly sized ute.

Oh, very nice. It's not like the overwrought Cullinan. It's nicely understated and is better proportioned than you'd expect. It's quite a beautiful vehicle and that interior looked exquisite. I doubt I'd like the kind of person that drives one though.

It is an armored vehicle and technically an APC but non-military so they just usually say armored vehicle. Mostly APCs bring to mind things like a Stryker, etc that has decent offensive capability. APCs seem to have outgrown the original term, so I've seen it split into IFV (F for fighting) and IMV (for mobility). It fits into the lines of being an IMV (Infantry Mobility Vehicle). Although, the G3 has an optional turret for counter assault, which gets even more gray descriptively (and a little less-police-ish IMO, but won't ruin the thread w/politics).

Why? Is it moveable? It's so overbuilt it's a little odd looking.

So it's an armored personal carrier with defensive capabilities? What would the huge roof platform be used for?

Not sure if they have a midgate or not... the back just seems like a good place to throw a couple mountain bikes or your stanky wetsuit or whatever else you don't want in the back seat on the way home from adventure time. Maybe not sized for lumber or skis though.

As @ClassicDatsunDebate it's an observation platform, but can also be used for alternate entry assault (and retrieval of hostages/personnel) on another floor (second floor or more if you have a ladder).
This one might have some platform mobility, but it's hard to tell as the units are pretty custom to client needs. More pics needed.

Oh, no midgate, just a pass-through. Why didn't they make it go all the way up? Could you really easily fit mountain bikes back there?
I don't think so. I like utes but this specific ute isn't my favorite.

I figured with the front wheel hung over the tailgate you'd be good to go.
-
@WhoIsTheLeader @ClassicDatsunDebate
I knew it was familiar, was bothering me so dug around a bit. It's the MARS. Forgot how much it articulates.
-
@looseonexit Maybe there was an emergency at the airport. . .
Ah, so that's why it looked so overbuilt. I figured it moved or something.
