I've been looking at Triple Triangles

I've always liked these frames, I originally wanted one as a commuter bike but I found the Hardrock instead. I'm happy with it. but I've been wanting to build another drop bar MTB (I really wanna go all out w discs and a modern drivetrain). I found a Palomar for sale locally for $20, it could either be the next project or a donor for the red Hardrock. Either way I win.
I think this is a Zaskar, I dig the chrome/polished aluminum look. Some Swiss dude built it. Absolutely gorgeous. Here it is in a thread with other GTs on bike forums.
Here's another tricked out and modernized GT, this was built by the original owner too. Here it is on Imgur. -
@s65 Wow those look great!
-
@s65 that looks fantastic
-
@s65 this is beautifully cohesive, the silver spokes really tie everything together. ive been mulling over converting my 26er on-one inbred to dropbars and gravel-ifying it and this might have pushed me over the edge.
-
@s65 I continue to be slightly bitter that my dad got rid of the 26" GT mountain bike I had stored at their house without even asking me.
-
@s65 Here's a GT Rage I overhauled for my SIL,
-
@s65 I'm skeptical of 26" mtb to gravel bike conversions, the front end height and steering looks really wonky to me. Seems like just buy a drop bar surly and enjoy it.

I have a GT Avalanche 2.0. I bought it in early 2006. It's been pretty good.

@s65 as the owner of a rebuilt several times '99 Zaskar and a GT Traffic as my city runabout I approve this message....

I ride one as my daily commuter. It's definitely odd. The stem has to be up high to get a good grip on the drops. It looks real funky. I don't ride this on trails and I feel like I could have gone shorter. In hindsight I would have gone for a threadless adapter, you can feel the quill stem flex under hard braking. Didn't notice that till I got my last bike with a threadless stem. People still mod and weld disc brake tabs unto these old '26ers. They got a lot of life left in em.

@zipfuel pics pls

@dejock Do it!
-
@s65 thatโs exactly my issue with this conversion. Seems like the fit could be much better.
-
@s65 what's the upside to updating an old frame other than the nostalgia and possible cheap starting point? Aren't there more modern frames that will work without the trouble of converting things?
Don't get me wrong, the GT frames look great and everyone seems to want one, but I am with @Highlander on this one, the majority look really goofy and you end up with a cheap old frame, high end components, crappy rim brakes and a weird looking bike.
-
@highlander I'm probably gonna get a shorter stem or go threadless later, once I build another thing to ride. I ride a bike more than I drive at this point.

I'm throwing out my opinion here, and almost everyone here knows my "old bike" tendency.
My feeling is that I prefer a older lightweight steel frame over any lower end modern aluminum frame. I just don't think the modern low end aluminum frames ride nice enough to spend my time on. The more modern lightweight high end frames, mostly high tech composites have better ride quality. They are pricey and the future of their durability is unknown.
My 40 year old light steel bikes ride nice and will last, that is proven. Yes, old components are an issue. That hasn't slowed me down too much.The answer here isn't just one size fits all. Bike fit is individual, and some frames just don't fit every rider.
-
@sovande Cheaper starting point, they're cheaper and I really like those old bikes. A new bike is defo better but I like these old frames. I could also get a newer bike. The Plaomar in the post is a newer cheaper one and I just want it for parts. I wouldn't mod one like that.
