weird cut lines
-
The overall design of a car matters a lot to me, and a bad cut line in the body work can really kill an otherwise good design for me (see the F30 BMW's hood, or the C8's - not calling either of these a great design without these...).
Anyway, I just noticed this weird little cut on the new BRZ. It's not horrendous, but it's definitely weird and it would've looked better without it. They were attempting to make it flow into that crease in the body, but it sticks out like a sore thumb.
The new Supra is also just a mess of cut lines...
Show me the automotive cut lines you hate, OPPO (or some that got it really right).
-
@davesaddiction I saw this on a Kia of some sort recently
-
-
@davesaddiction Yeah, that one I feel was a necessary compromise for how the inner and outer portions of that front fender come together. Having that 'flank' be a separate component probably made manufacturing and assembly a whole lot easier.
As for cut lines that manufacturers got right, my go-to is always the 3rd gen Lexus IS. The taillights to rear bumper cut line and how that blends into the crease line for the rockers is amaaaaaazing....
-
-
@davesaddiction This is a case where, I wonder, if a well done, not too OTT, bit of chrome trim wouldn't help? Turn the line into a piece of decoration, so it looks like it's supposed to be there
-
@davesaddiction It may not be the worst cut-line, but I’d say the two-tone option on Imprezas didn’t do the car any favors.
The first time I saw one I thought the car was wrecked and slapped back together with mismatched panels from a junk yard. -
@davesaddiction I've always liked this one.
-
@davesaddiction the hood on the NC Miata always really bothered me:
-
-
I actually think that's better than the weird panel the new one has.
(I understand that often this is a necessity for ped. crash regs)
-
@davesaddiction That bugged the crap out of me, too. I get why it's broken up that way, but that would have led me to find another solution that didn't require a trinket to achieve.
Now, for a palate cleanser:
-
@kiltedpadre Yeah, that shit is SO BAD.
-
Yum...

First of all, samsies. Secondly, I have always thought that about the F chassis hood. It feels nice to hear someone else point it out.
You know what I think is good/not good, haha

The current Accord has this same straight line. It's brutal.
FWIW, I also hated the way the F30's headlights connected with the kidneys.
Eyeballs don't touch nostrils, people!

@frinesi2 good one

I was about to give Rivian a hard time, but this is the charge port.
What's better - something like this, or just a normal access panel?
-
@davesaddiction Hide it behind the tail light or license plate - problem solved
-
Behind the plate doesn't work for a back hatch.
Here's where they put it on the truck:
-
@davesaddiction I dunno... Rivian's a tough call. I do wish that they'd been able to do the cutline horizontal, but... I get it.
As for other charge port panels that work well:
Taycan does it better than Audi e-tron GT, though not half as baller as the prototype:
i8 is at least congruent with the crease and pillar:
But as much as I hate to say it, Tesla's still done it best.
Charge ports can go damn near anywhere; it always seems to me like a missed opportunity when you just cut a hole in a quarter panel.

Ford did it first

-
@frinesi2 it’s always a bit weird to see a hood not go all the way to the headlights. The UDSM Integra had this quirk too.
-
@davesaddiction that seems like a horrible place to put the charge port. Way to likely to get smacked in a small accident.
