Good Morning Oppo and Merry Christmas and Calvin

Always liked this one:
-
Imagine engaging in commerce during Christmas LMAO those bums who make and sell gifts don't deserve my money.
-
@ttyymmnn Grandmas have it right. Christmas is for socks, underwear, and clothes that you need but don't necessarily want.
-
@forsweden It's not the buying. I have no problem with capitalism, as long as everyone has a level playing field.
It's the rabidness of Black Friday (especially in past years - Covid has changed a lot) with people fighting each other, people getting trampled, waking up early to leave your family gathering the day after Thanksgiving to go save a few bucks on a TV or whatever, and employees having to work on days that they should be able to be home with their families...
The waste involved with a lot of consumerism is worth considering, too. I think most Oppos are the type to fix something to keep it running as long as possible, but here are plenty who would, for example, send their 3 year old fridge to the landfill if it had a few LEDs not working on the water/ice dispenser (like ours does), even if it was working perfectly fine otherwise.

@bicyclebuck LOL - don't forget the oranges!

And the bananas. All the fruit which was promptly taken from us Christmas morning and used for the fruit salad for Christmas dinner. I remember getting in trouble for eating the fruit. I figured that it was in my stocking, so it was mine.

@bicyclebuck You figure wrong, bucko...
We also got pecans, hazelnuts & almonds in the shell.
Gotta put in the work to enjoy your gift, son!

You bet I got it wrong. Grandma was not happy with me that day.
We also got nuts. Then we'd fight over the nutcracker.
Grandpa would always crack the pecans by holding two or three in his hands and just squeezing. I considered it a right of passage when I was finally big enough and strong enough to do the same.
-
@bicyclebuck we got one of these a few years back. They’re incredible. You’ll toss your old nutcracker into the swamp.
-
@bicyclebuck We had the exact same set, fellow old. Ha!
@ClassicDatsunDebate Ooh... link? Mrs. addiction has a HUGE collection of nutcrackers (see my thoughts on overconsumption above...), but she surely wouldn't let me use any on nuts.

I saw that when I was googling the photo of the "old" kind we had access to when I was a kid. I'll consider that a solid endorsement. We have a pecan tree out back which started producing again this year. Next year, I'll be ready for it!

That takes me back. We used to get walnuts etc in the shell, and also had a big bowl of them sitting out, every Christmas. I may have to resurrect that tradition.
-
@ttyymmnn Yeah, same here (on both counts).

Ditto. Wow, that takes me back.
You knew it was Christmas when one of these was on the coffee table filled with nuts still in the shell.
-
@trivet We had something like this, made of walnut.

Very cool.
I hadn't though about that bowl in years........REALLY took me back. Wow, this post hit me hard.

My grandparents had that kind of bowl with the the metal nutcracker, but the bowl didn't have the handy storage pedestal in the middle.
-
@trivet We just had a big crock filled with nuts in the shell. We didn't even keep the nutcracker nearby...Mom insisted on keeping it in the silverware drawer in the kitchen, far away from...you know...the nuts it was meant to crack.

Mom logic. The same principle applied to the hand towels and fancy soaps that were for "guests" but no one (including guests) were allowed to use.
-
@trivet Oh man, “guest soap”. The forbidden soap
