A minty yellow 1990 Trabant 601 Deluxe is for sale. This seller clearly loves these things because the photos imply it was bought abroad, driven a bit, and shipped here.
I would love to be the guy to one up a Thunderbird with a smokey East German relic.
What country do we suppose that is?
Nice interior!

This is not incredibly far away from me. If you want me to hold on to it for a while, hehe. . .
I'll admit, $7,000 USD seems like a lot but where are you going to find another one?
-
@whoistheleader Not going to lie - I kind of love these things.
-
OH YES!
Country? It's Poland! The plates are Polish and those are Polish registration sticker at the bottom-left corner of the windshield!
Very cool, I'd say $7k USD is fair...expensive, but fair. Finding one in that good a shape, let alone in North America is rare!
-
@jminer Why would you lie? Trabants are amazing! Not strictly good, objectively, but amazing nonetheless.
-
@rallydarkstrike Well it can be yours for the low low price of $9,150 CAD. I'd round it off to an even 9k if I got to keep it a month or three until you showed up to claim it. Hehe. It would make the perfect winter car, totally, because cotton doesn't rust! Does it? Probably not.
I probably should have guessed Poland. I guess it was a sort of Trabant trek on a Polish pilgrimage.
-
@whoistheleader Duroplast doesn't rust, but the steal monocoque under the Duroplast does!
Common misconception with Trabants is that their body is ALL Duroplast...they are not!
This cool old video of the VEB Sachsenring factory where they were built should give you an idea how much of them is actually Duroplast!
The production footage starts around 5:06! -
@rallydarkstrike I was going to say that they rust like a Corvette or a Saturn. Looks good, drives dangerously.
I remember that footage of the factory. It doesn't look like a place I'd like to work but it's amazing that the car was built at all given what they were working with. Really helps you appreciate the complexity of a car as simple as the Trabant. Building cars is really hard!
I especially love the rear wheel life at around 35 minutes where they are whipping them onto the train loading platform.
-
@whoistheleader Haha, yup! Wish I could find some video of the 126p factories in Poland!
-
@rallydarkstrike Your google-foo is weak, my friend. Try again!
<iframe width="1579" height="553" src="
" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>How the heck do I embed?
But yeah, that was harder than I thought.
-
@whoistheleader Should be able to just copy-paste the Youtube URL staight into the editor and then hit Submit...? That's all I did?
-
This was the only footage I could dig up but it won't embed in preview. -
Wait, that wasn't as hard as I expected. I didn't look up the obvious because I assumed it wouldn't be there. It appears to be different than the other one.
