My old shocks were done, and judging from the massive improvement in handling and ride quality after the shock replacement, they had been very done for a long time. In fact, the car drives better now than it ever has in my 9 years of owning it. Driving with blown shocks meant waving the steering wheel in the general direction you're trying to go, more out of hope than actual expectation. -
Amen to that. This March I replaced the front dampers in my car with Old Man Emu, and now the ride is sublime.
-
@annoying_salman Car? What vehicle? Haven't heard of Old Man Emu before, that's hilarious.

ooo yellow

@ricerocketeer I'm gonna do Koni STR.Ts on my Accord when I get paid, with Eibach springs. Should make it handle much better.

I drive a 1986 Daihatsu Taft GT, though in other markets it's also known as Rocky, Rugger, or Fourtrak. Because of this, usually it's often referred by its model designation, F70.
I only know the fact that Old Man Emu is from Australia that focuses on off-road equipments, and based on what I read on the internet apparently their product is (mostly) pretty good, so that's why I decided to try their product. I installed their N43 Nitrocharger.

@s65 Don't bother. STR.Ts are absolute garbage and do NOT last.
Special Actives are good as are the Sport Yellows (which have adjustable dampening). The Koni Red adjustables are good as well.
Basically, anything in Koni's lineup that's not the STR.T are good...

@annoying_salman
I had Old Man Emus on my 99 Jeep XJ. They were a superb balance for daily street/light off road duty. -
@annoying_salman Old Man Emu springs and shocks are big on jeeps here in the US. Very solid reputation. Also that Daihatsu of yours looks awesome!

I don't know about that! I thought people in the US prefer Fox shocks, no? And I heard that Chevrolet Silverado 1500 was equipped with Rancho shocks if I remember correctly. I really hope my Old Man Emu shocks can last for a long time given they were priced between 4 to 7 times more expensive than the OEM shock.
Also that Daihatsu of yours looks awesome!
Thanks
It's my pride and joy!
-
@annoying_salman Old man emu isn't a household name like Fox or Rancho but they do a lot of specialty stuff well and have a following for it. They're usually more expensive but are known for excellent performance and comfort.
-
@dieseldub I recall Golds being super soft out of the box on my Mk4, too...
When the whole point of having slow/fast damping valved differently is that you can have a firm damper that isn't harsh on bumps, and the slow damping is soft anyway... defeats the point. Had I known they were gonna be like that, I wouldn't have gotten them.
-
@RiceRocketeer Old Man Emu are an Australian brand and part of the ARB family. They're a big name in four wheel drive circles here in Australia, but yeah, the name does sound a bit ridiculous.
-
@s65 I had Koni Str.ts (and Eibachs actually) on my C30 and thought they were great combo. I have the Koni Actives on my V60 and I like them a lot as well. Much better than stock.
-
@dieseldub Interesting, I had those shocks on my C30 and they were pretty great for the 30,000 or so hard miles they were on the car. I had no issues at all and frankly found them to be far better than the Bilstein option and the stock Sachs. I also had the Koni FSDs in that car and they sucked shit with nowhere near enough control over rebound.

Special Actives
really? The STR.Ts are bad? I was looking at them cause of the price, my car is just a daily and I don't need to run anything really adjustable or agressive.
-
@ricerocketeer love the feel of upgraded shocks on old cars. Just some basic KYB gas a just shocks on my bird really reduces dive and body roll
-
While I enjoy the stiffness of my coilovers on the sti, i think the fact that they replaced struts which had 180,000 miles on them made more of a difference than anything.
