hot/shitty idea: diesel swapped panther?
-
I woke up in the middle of the night thinking of this. Great torque for a big ass car, better mileage. Feels like a good fit personality wise. I googled it and found this
https://buy.motorious.com/articles/news/376502/ford-crown-victoria-power-stroke-diesel-swapnow i really want to...
-
@more2000sbmws a BMW or Mercedes inline 6 would be an interesting swap.
-
@more2000sbmws While I think the concept is perfect, I have to wonder if the 6.0 was used due to cost because it's generally a pile in stock trim?
-
@jb-boin A BMW straight 6 would have some historical basis, too. They were never used in Panther cars, but you could at least get a Lincoln Continental or Mark VII with one back in the '80s, and those were at least built in the same assembly plant as Town Cars.
-
No. 7.3 Godzilla swap.
-
@more2000sbmws Can you put the diesel in it and then use biodiesel fuel in it? Not for any environmental reasons, just so you can have an old panther that smells like stale french fries both inside and out.
-
@ranwhenparked indeed! I've actually pondered doing an M57T2 into a MkVIII for that very reason.
Not a Panther platform either, but it's less archaic. Unibody and independent rear suspension RWD chassis. Ought to handle a fair bit better.
Any of those 3/4 and 1 ton truck diesels are heavy, heavy pigs. A stout 3L 6 that can knock on the door of 400 hp with stock turbos, injectors and internals is a very compelling case, especially considering the weight savings.
-
Eh, they're so heavy. I'm not into the swapping truck diesels into a car thing, that has become so hot on the internets lately.
-
This debauchery makes me smile, aside from the attached context of having to be seen driving a panther car that would come with it. I'd be tempted to ponder the idea along the lines of swapping in something like 4 cylinder Isuzu diesel from a used up box truck, or something.
-
I'm not big into it either, but recently got my wife a diesel x5, and i have a wagoneer i keep saying im going to get a bt4 for. so im just on a diesel kick right now...

i laughed way too hard at that

@more2000sbmws If you are referring to the 4BT, don't. It weights as much as a Duramax, has the power of a VW diesel(you can get more out of them, but you need to find a specific injection pump equipped one), is as costly as a 6BT, and has the refinement of a tractor engine from the 40's. The Cummins R2.8 would probably work great in a Wagoneer though.
-
@jordan Good call. That Cummins 2.8 crate motor is a compelling package for a light truck or SUV swap. We also have the VM Motori 2.8 found in mid 2000s Jeep Liberties and a later revision of that design in the Canyon/Colorado mid size pick ups. So, at least there's the potential to find reasonably priced used parts for such a swap.
Shop-mate of mine has a 4BT swapped 1979 F150... it's kinda cool, not gonna lie. It's had some upgrades to get more revs and power out of it. It will sail past 3000 RPM no problem now, makes 26 lbs of boost. Embarrasses the modified 300 6 he had in it before.
Way better fuel economy and requires virtually zero electronics to run it. As an apocalypse vehicle, it's hard to beat.
-
@dieseldub They aren't a bad engine at all, but they've been meme'd to the point of being expensive, and P-pump ones are fairly rare.

This is the best idea.
I'm not a fan of diesels, too slow to rev up, too slow to build boost, too heavy. Give me a large displacement NA V8 instead.
But, if you're into that sort of thing, go for it! It's not like the Crown Vic is a rare or highly treasured vehicle, so build as many as you want.

the 4bt? the rare times I see them for sale they go quick and are like $6k, makes sense...
-
@more2000sbmws Yes, there is now no real price difference between that and a 6BT. And before you pay $6k for a 4BT, the R2.8 comes as a swap in crate engine for not much more.
-
6bt won't fit in my jeep (easily). That 2.8 seems like it fits the bill though and its a full setup, i imagine a lot of the 4bts are going to be ...hacky
( I say this all like i even have time soon haha) -
