Unnecessary car shopping: Cayman test drive edition
-
Base model but with the extended leather interior and it was upsettingly good. I thought the LC500 was super good but now there’s no clear better car. I’ve never felt turbo lag that bad before but on boost it was quick and just felt right. Which makes sense because it’s a bigger, better Miata. I don’t know what I want now, but that’s okay because I’m not buying anytime soon.
-
Good color combo
-
@dr-zoidberg Actually the same color combo as the LC I test drove. I definitely want a color both inside and out, beggars cant be choosers when test driving used local cars though.
-
@milky careful test driving Caymans, that's how I ended up with mine
-
I test drove a GTS with a $100k sticker. Gawdayum it was good.
I was getting really tempted when 2018 models were getting cleared out for %20 off sticker..
-
@poor_sh TBH I’d be okay with that. Any input on do / donts? Like your trim, color?
-
@saracen I’m un-secretly hoping the new GTS 4.0 starts to depreciate. I don’t need more power but a NA engine would be nice. Though the good thing about coming from a ND1 Miata is the base cayman still has double the power.
-
Nice Porsh!
-
@chan And mid engined! First time driving with the engine behind me, felt good.
-
Very cool! As long as the driving is enjoyable, and you don't think the lag would be annoying over time
-
There's plenty of Caymans with NA engines, I have zero interest in a turbo charged Cayman. The NA's are all you need, and also, you should have a 6 cylinder engine. Because reasons.
-
@milky depends on what you want it for. I got the 981 because i prefer NA. I got the manual but i found one with sport chrono for the track and autocross. I got the S because i came from a mustang and wanted the power but honestly might have been better with a base and spending the extra on track days. I found one with a sport steering wheel because i don't want buttons there. I found it with the lowest number of seat motors so it has less electronics to go bad. I got the 19" wheels not the 20" for ride comfort and cheaper tires. The blue i have is the absolute best of the subtle colors followed closely by agate gray. But i would have loved race yellow...
One option i really wanted was sport exhaust but it sounded pretty nice stock. Now it's not stock. Problem solved lol
I don't usually like beige interiors but it looks great with the dark blue metallic and really lightens up the interior so it feels more roomy. Wear polarized sunglasses for the dash reflection in the windshield though.
I got a cpo car so they fixed a few things under warranty but it's beat on enough I'm not keeping it museum ready. Oil changes, brake fluid and pads, lots of stuff isn't that bad to do and you'll save SOOO much money by diy.
The frunk is huge and awesome the trunk is good too. Aftermarket parts are ridiculously expensive but also high quality. Some OEM parts are very much cheaper but same quality without the Porsche name brand.
Ask whatever you want, I've had it 2.5 years and have done basically everything you can with it lol
-
@milky man that interior looks Goooooooood.
-
@milky I haven’t had the pleasure of driving a 911 yet but it’s on my to-do list. Not planning to buy one though.
-
@misterbuttercup @MidEngine I mean the lag was pretty bad but downshifting solves that problem. Though I've never owned a turbo car, NA is definitely preferred. I mean it is a Porsche after all.
-
@poor_sh First off blue over tan looks great. You have done a lot with your car, how many miles have you put on? Any reliability concerns? I put on a lot of miles, major consideration over here.
Sounds like you got a good one. Since I'd prefer NA, manual, CPO, good exhaust. I do like the 718s updated looks but like previously posted, not buying soon so theres time to figure it out.
-
@milky very true, and ok, well that solves that then!
-
@milky I've put 30,000 over 2.5 years (covid and buying the miata slowed me down a lot). Haven't had any reliability issues, just really bad luck a few times with scratches, windshields, a deer, a nail in a tire.... bad luck not reliability though. And even though I do a lot of my own work, Porsche dealerships are incredible. Very expensive but so worth it sometimes. You can see they really give a shit about their customers and their image as being excellent.
-
Turbo lag is the whole fun with turbos! It makes me laugh maniacally in the Subaru every damn time. It doesn't contribute to good 0-60 times but that 60-100 is so damn fun every time. Opposite of the miata where exceeding 60 is pointless.
-
Here I go unnecessarily car shopping...
-
@poor_sh my impression too. I had a steering fluid leak covered 85% out of warranty and I wasn’t even the first owner.
-
Ya'll enjoy the n/a cars, I'll take a boosted H4 Cayman.
-
@milky forgot to mention, Sapphire Blue is the best 981 color, period, done, no questions. But I thought as a daily and parking it everywhere it wouldn't be subtle enough street parked on a shitty road

Silver with red leather never gets old.
I wonder how this compares to a 981 GTS?
