Ultimate engine out job
-
Earlier this year, one of the electric propulsion motors in the Coast Guard Cutter Healy failed catastrophically. Replacing a motor on a ship - especially an icebreaker - is no mean feat, as you'll see in this video.

Yeah it's typical shenanigans. A lot more difficult and time consuming than the day we took a spare GE LM2500 onboard. (still dinged some small pipes on the deck though).

A friend’s dad had a twin engine Cummins turbo diesel. When the first engine fails, you can still give the boat away. But if the second engine fails you have to pay someone to take it.

Audi calls that “service position”.....

We actually never had any issues with them, I know the military guys did.
Always one on standby for use. Cranks up to full prop power in something stupid like 60 or 90s from dead cold. Our biggest issues were that they drank distillate like a 21yo fitter on New Years. It lead to the many tanker trucks of New Caledonia incident.

@engineerwithtools now some clown at Audi PR is going to post this every time someone complains about the service position

@exage03040 Yeah it's really dependent on the level of care they receive, on the military vessels where you have a lot of crew turnover, it's hit and miss as to whether they are well taken care of (they usually are in rough shape). Yep they are good for special situations (like icebreaking or getting/leaving somewhere quick), but they definitely drink like sailors.
